Tuesday night, Williamsville East was at the free throw line in its game against the Billies. A Williamsville South cheerleader began performing a series of back flips on the opposite end and made it all the way to half court. The Flames' Trenton Miller, who was facing the free throw situation on the middle of the court at the center line, realized she was coming at him a second before she would have taken him out, and moved. Definitely one of the crazier things I've seen this season.
It was upset Thursday in the Yale Cup yesterday, as three ranked schools fell to unranked league opponents, with two of the games having a major impact on the league race. Ninth ranked large school Bennett was beaten by Riverside, sixth ranked large school East lost at Hutch Tech, and sixth ranked small school OTC Middle College fell to City Honors. The league implications are that East falls back into a tie with McKinley in Division I, while I-Prep at Grover can now clinch the Division II title with a win at MST Seneca on Tuesday.
On Thursday night, JFK held Eden to four points in the second half, while scoring 44.
Wilson's quest for its first ever Section VI title will be even more difficult moving forward. The team just learned yesterday that they will be without the services of senior Tyler Truesdell for the remainder of the season. Truesdell will have knee surgery this month. He started at forward for Wilson this season and has been a major part of the team's success this year.
Lakemen senior Brennan Moxham surpassed 1,ooo points for his career in a 24-point performance in the Lakemen's win over CSAT. He is just the third player in school history to achieve that honor.
Moxham also became the school's all-time leader in 3-pointers made, surpassing the previous mark of 120 held by former teammate and current Medaille College player Ethan Baker. Moxham now has 122 and only needs 197 more to overtake Williamsville South's Joe Licata as the all-time leader in WNY.
Maryvale's Blair Estarfaa scored 28 points in a win over Lake Shore on Friday to surpass 1,000 points in his career.
Niagara Falls (NFL), Dunkirk (CCAA I), Williamsville South (ECIC II), I-Prep at Grover (Yale Cup II), and St. Joe's (MMAA) are the only teams that remain unbeaten in league play as the teams prepare to enter the final week of the regular season.
Holland junior Jordan Farrant is already just 28 points shy of 1,ooo in his career after a stat-stuffing performance on Tuesday in a win over East Aurora. Farrant finished with a triple-double that included 20 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, six steals, and four blocks.
After three quarters on Tuesday, Dunkirk lead Gowanda 74-17.
After blowing a five-point lead in the final seconds of its loss at McKinley, Riverside overcame a six-point deficit with 1:37 remaining against Bennett to win the game.
And now for the Riverside @ McKinley portion of Random Smatterings:
After one of his players was whistled for a foul, McKinley coach Zaire Dorsey said to the scoreboard operator, who is also the high school PE teacher, "this week in class, can you teach him how to run up from behind and not bump into someone".
When Riverside's Deon Artis attempted to follow a miss with a dunk, the break-away rim was left bent down, but no one on the court noticed. The action quickly went the other way, but then the Frontiers' Willie Jefferson came back on a break and missed a lay-up because of the rim being bent.
Riverside coach Ron Killinger raced onto the court from the opposite end to plead for the points after the bent rim incident. As he came back towards his bench, he was limping badly and the trainer ran over to see what he had done. "Oh, I pulled my hamstring last week, I'm alright", Killinger said.
Justice Feggans stole an inbounds pass and scored...on the wrong basket. Referee Steve Allen ran to the scorer's table and said "Count the basket and give the points to (he turned around to see who was closest) number five". That was two points in a game that went to overtime.
When the McKinley concession stand finished up before the game ended, the remaining pizza was brought to the scorer's table. Steve Allen told everyone at the table, "I don't want you eating pizza right now, this (the game) is too important".

With East losing to Hutch Tech, they drop to the #2 seed in Class A2. However, Riverside's win against Bennett moves them up to the #7 seed, so both teams moved to the other side of the A2 bracket and could still face each other in the quarterfinals.
