Update from Albany AAU May 29-30
2011 GymRat CHALLENGE
By STEVE AMEDIO GymRat CHALLENGE Director of Communications
ALBANY, N.Y. – The GymRat CHALLENGE AAU boys’ basketball tournament has a well-deserved reputation as a stage for young players to emerge as stars, but the 2011 version of one of the nation’s largest AAU events showed that talent is only one important ingredient in becoming a GymRat CHALLENGE Champion.
17:U All-GymRat CHALLENGE TEAM
Matt Hart (6-2 PT) East Coast Fusion/Canisius H.S.: True floor general who commands his team. Excellent change of pace to handle pressure and to create in the half court. Showed set range from 3-point line and a solid floater in the lane. Added strength will allow him to succeed at the next level. Ivies, Patriots and numerous D-II’s already interested.
17:U Honorable Mention
Reggie Ekbeko (6-7 F) Buffalo Dragons
Jamal Carter (6-0 G) Buffalo Dragons
Jordan Williams (6-2 G) Buffalo Dragons
Great props for the Buffalo boys …96 teams competed in the 17U division

how did dragond do? this is a pretty good event. is reggie really 6"7

Reggie is actually 6'7 1/2" with shoes on. Dragons lost 3 games by a total of 9 points, mainly due to very little practice time over last month. Coach Rodney Nevins of the Buffalo Dragons has done such a great job with Reggie that a national top 30 AAU program has added Reggie onto its roster as a starter in Orlando to compete in front of all 300+ D1 coaches and program reps.

Wow West Virginia thats great for him,has anybody offered him. He must be joining City rocks they have the taplin kid and a NFHS kid on their younger team. It will be interestingon what level he ends up I think he is a low to mid D1 but hey best of luck, has his cousin arrived yet I hear he is even better

Hart lead the Fusion to a 4-1 record, losing to the eventual runner up in the qtr final. A top 8 finish of 96 teams. Hart's game expanding quickly and getting noticed. He does all you'd ask of a good point guard. He was one of 43 out of 900 boys to get All Gym Rat. All divisions are showing interest now. Surely more to come here.

City Rocks is not the team that picked up Reggie; it is an out of state, New England AAU team. He would easily remain a low to mid major if he simply played the traditional 4, 5 position that St. Joes or other western new york high schools would have him play. However, his most natural position is playing the wing or 3, which he has done much of the spring while playing with Upstate Elite and some with Buffalo Dragons. His cousin is to arrive in August I believe.

wow a 3, i saw him a couple of times and didnt see that but he was used as a post. You must mean the NE Playaz,I believe Javon mcrae played with them. How many AAU teams does he play with ? Hart is a great shooter but with nevins there I never saw him as a pg very interesting 2 kids who seem to be playing out of position at their hs but flourishing on the aau circut, wonder if the hs coaches will change thier role, anyways good stuff for local kids although Reggie is an implant lol

Speaking of big men-- it's official- Will Regan is going to UB.
My story:
"I spoke to the father of former Nichols basketball star Will Regan, and he told me his son has committed to play basketball at the University at Buffalo next season after spending his freshmen year at the University of Virginia.
Regan will make things official later today.
Because he is transferring from Virginia, Regan will have to sit out the 2011-12 college basketball season and will still have three years of eligibility remaining. The two-time Buffalo News Player of the Year in high school, Regan played in 20 games for Virginia last season but scored a total of just 25 points to go with 18 rebounds as his playing time was nearly non-existent.
Regan also considered the University of Niagara and four other schools before deciding on UB, who has been pursuing him since before he went on to become a high school star at Nichols.
Regan became the Monsignor Martin Association’s all-time leading scorer in 2009-10, surpassing the 2,000 career point mark. He’s one of just four players (Jonny Flynn, Paul Harris, Christian Laettner) to be named the Buffalo News Player of the Year more than once."
