I love it when a player comes in during a Prep Talk chat using some johnny-come-lately name and asks a question about himself. It's always like "Hey Keith, what do you think of that so-and-so kid from XYZ. I see he scored 27 the other night, making a case for All-WNY".
Here are the last four point totals from junior Darnell Carson of CSAT: 32, 27, 29, & 20.
One of my favorites is when a player jumps out of bounds to save a ball, only to throw it against the back of the backboard.
There are only three teams in WNY that haven't lost to a team from WNY: St. Joe's, Jamestown, and Olean.
Stan Wier dropped 37 points on the Warriors in East Aurora's 71-44 win over Cheektowaga, Quinten Campbell scored 33 points to lead Kenmore West past Lew-Port, 62-49, and Jon Gemerek finished with 31 points to lift Depew past Maryvale, 66-59.
Cheektowaga trailed Springville, 45-31 after three quarters of play. The Warriors then used a 31-9 fourth quarter to comeback and win, 62-54.
Akron saw four of its players score a team-high eight points and held Wilson to single-digits in all four quarters of a 53-25 stunner in the N-O.
Kyle Kobis led Bishop Timon/St. Jude with 24 points, as the Tigers earned a 62-42 victory against St. Francis. During the win, Kobis sank a 3-pointer that lifted him past 1,ooo points for his career.
Olean is New York State's #1 ranked team in Class B.
I see a lot of the same faces at the big games each week, including one of the players. If the Warriors aren't practicing or playing, Clayton Hess of Tonawanda can be found at a high school basketball game somewhere.
Grand Island picked up its first league win of the season over Niagara Wheatfield on Friday, outscoring the Falcons 15-6 in the fourth quarter to comeback and win, 49-47. It was the Vikings second straight victory.
Williamsville South topped Iroquois, 77-67, in a game with a high-scoring finish. The Chiefs outscored the Billies, 31-30 in the fourth quarter.
Joe Lowery finished with 37 points in Niagara Catholic's loss to Walsh, Connor Keenan scored 37 points in a 76-72 loss to Iroquois, Barker sophomore Jake Haight put up 35 points & 21 rebounds on Newfane in a 74-64 loss, Sean Weisensal had 34 points for Maryvale in a loss to Depew, and Stan Wier of East Aurora scored 32 points in a losing effort at Amherst.
St. Joe's sophomore, Tyler Hill, a starter for the varsity football and JV basketball teams, was spotted cheering for the Panthers in the Blue Zone when Newfane beat Wilson on Thursday night.
Junior Zeddie Williams scored 18 points, grabbed 15 boards, and dished seven assists as Silver Creek avenged its only loss this season, beating Randolph, 57-54.

How good is Olean? Any players worth watching?
If so I might try to see one of their games.

CC, haven't seen Molson's name at Cleve Hill this year. Any idea why?
Posted by: Lucky13 | Wednesday, February 08, 2012 at 08:29 PM
Lucky13 -
I emailed Cleveland Hill head coach Jeff Przybysz at the start of the season, asking about Jeru Molson. His response was "Jeru Molson is no longer a part of the basketball program".
When I was at the Tonawanda @ Cleveland Hill game in January, I did see Jeru there, but didn't ask him about it.

A question like that makes me wonder if you even bother to read the stuff I write or if you're just in it for the comments section :-)
Seriously though, Olean is outstanding. They have a little of everything including great coaching, high basketball IQ, a top big man, shooters, slashers, ball handlers, and hustle. The coolest thing about this team is that they start four sophomores and a junior. The first player off the bench is a sophomore.
Any of the first six in the Huskies rotation are excellent. Sam Eckstrom is 6-6 and I'm sure will garner some D1 interest. Wil Bathurst is their most athletic player, can flat out score, and can do just about anything on the court well. Nick Scmidt is a pure shooter with great court sense and the son of St. Bonaventure coach Mark Scmidt. Luke Hennessy plays the point and deserves more recognition in these forums when discussing the best pure point guards. He shoots well from the perimeter, but his top attribute is efficiently running the offense. Pat Scholla is a classic glue guy, who plays smart, is defensive minded, and hustles all over the place. Max Portlow came off the bench in the last game of theirs I watched, and has to be one of the best 6th men in WNY. He reminds me of Nicc Johnson from St. Mary's with his offensive game.
I would recommend seeing them play. They are capable of beating any team in WNY, and I would only rank Joe's, Falls, Canisius, and Jamestown ahead of them. You can most likely see them play on Saturday March 3rd, 1:45 pm, at Buffalo State.
Posted by: centercourt | Wednesday, February 08, 2012 at 09:43 PM
Thanks, I will try to see them.
BTW: I started out only reading your stuff until I found out we could comment. I started out only coming here for rankings and game summaries, now I check the site everyday!

Connor Keenan is having a fantastic season. Certainly a top 10 player in WNY
Posted by: local | Wednesday, February 08, 2012 at 09:59 PM
Tyler Hill was spotted in Newfane's blue zone as he use to play for the panthers and now plays for St. Joes.. wait I mean he has always played for St. Joes and was just there to catch a good basketball game.

Great Smatterings CC!

Next year Olean will be the best team in WNY, large or small school---period.
They're pretty close that distinction right now.
Posted by: Patrick Moran | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 12:30 AM
Any other players close to 1000 pts for this year
Posted by: Round man | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 01:50 AM
I have never seen Olean play but looking forward to seeing them play at Buff State. However best team next year? Canisius returns Aaron White, Matt MacDonald, and my favorite CHS player Adam Weir, and who knows if Sterling Taplin is transferring or not. They also have another junior Pierre Smith who saw some minutes against Nichols on Tuesday who is an athlete and I am sure will play a major role next year. Joes also brings back Glover, Oliveri, the boy who transferred from CHS to Joes (who said he was going to dunk on White when CHS and Joes played). Feb 18th can't come soon enough.
Posted by: WT716 | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 07:41 AM
he didn't dunk on white but he and the rest of sj supporting cast made chs look foolish while reggie was sittin. take the jrs if you want hart is the guy we fear. he was the best player last game and last year he turned the game against us in the cup final. we stop him we win again.
Posted by: 845KA | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 08:20 AM
Canisius will be very good next year for sure, but I'm telling ya--Olean will be the best team in WNY.
To update something for tonight's big game, DiMilo Gibbs practiced on a limited basis yesterday for Timon. IF there was an offical injury report he'd be listed as questionable but I think he'll play tonight vs. St. Joe's.
He has a chest injury and missed the Frannies game adn has been out a few days.
Posted by: Patrick Moran | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 08:42 AM
Let's put this this way..
Dear organizers of the MMA/ECIC Challenge-- let's pit Olean vs Canisius together for the marquee game next season!
Posted by: Patrick Moran | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 08:43 AM
"THE BOY" you are referring to has a name, and it is Jaylen Morris. So the fact that you may have misinterpreted his comments about him dunking on his longtime best friend A.White is neither here nor there. On the other hand, yes both Joe's and Canisius will be special next year; however CHS may have a slightly different look for 2012-2013???????
Posted by: Guest | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Lets not start with the rumors of Taplin to Canisius. Either he will stay at Will North or go to a prep out of this area. He doesn't need to go to Canisius to boost his local recruitment and if he wanted more national recognition there are more likely options.
Posted by: TakeItToTheHole | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 11:05 AM
Trust me this has ABSOLUTLY ZERO to do with lil Tap.
Posted by: Guest | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 11:16 AM
*ABSOLUTELY (sorry)
Posted by: Guest | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 11:19 AM
He is referring to a comment above from WT716, where he specifically mentions the possibility of Taplin to Canisius. Has nothing to do with your surprise for 2013.
And I agree entirely with TakeItToTheHole.
Posted by: centercourt | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 11:23 AM
CC should I be saving you a spot for this evening, I know I"m getting there early.
Posted by: PatrickMoran | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 11:36 AM
I also agree about Tap. Nothing was ever mentioned with regard to a surprise, or Sterling. I simply stated that they (CHS) will look slightly different next season. So speculation never came from me, and they will look different 2012-2013. Although they will have the Three Juniors they will lose Two contributors to this team, similiar to losing Lyons last year.

I know this isnt Buff news but I missed the chat and am sure McShea reads this anyway. Since its ok for him to call kids idiots I read the "power 10" and wanted to say that McShea looks like an idiot. Has Timon, St. Marys and Walsh ahead of Niagara Falls. Timon lost to NF and Marys. Who the hell did they beat to be 5? Marys gets crushed by Walsh but there better than NF? And Wlash beats Marys so they must be better than NF? Is this all because NF lost to KW or just MMA bias? Its obvios all year you have no respect for KW. Marys and Timon gets free passes to lose but NF just sucks when they lose? Has KW lost since December? Guess it does not matter!!!!!

Here's a little Timon vs St. Joe's preview for tonight.

Posted by: PatrickMoran | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 12:20 PM
It should be MMA Power 10. Keith does a great job covering HS sports but there definitely is a bias towards the private schools. Joe's/Canisius best rivals, best fans, best game of the year, and so on. The Falls should be 4th or 5th just behind Joe's, Canisius, Olean, and maybe McKinley. KW should be ahead of Walsh and St. Mary's. It would be interesting to see how the Canisius v Ken West game would go at this point of the season instead of the first game. I am not saying the result would be different but it might be a little closer.
Posted by: Dark TML | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 12:58 PM
It would be nice to see a breakdown by position on local players maybe top 2 or 3at each position with stats to see how they compare
Posted by: Roundman | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 01:19 PM
Also when you vote for all wny do you have stats on each player.shooting percentages, assists, rebounds, steals, minutes played ,ect.
Posted by: Roundman | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 01:26 PM
Roundman -
There is no vote for The News All-WNY team. Keith makes all the selections for the News team on his own. Once he knows the 15 players on his first three teams, he gets stats on those players to print under their pictures. I compile my own version (All-Centercourt Team), Patrick Moran did one last year as well. There was no democracy involved in any of them.
As far as a position by position breakdown of players and their stats, I think defining positions in high school is difficult. Between Hart, Weir, & MacDonald, who is the 2,3,&4? Is Agbeko a forward or center? And if we compare Stan Wier's PPG to Adam Weir's PPG, someone might argue that Adam's numbers would be higher and Stan's lower, if the two switched teams.
It would be nice to see everyone's numbers, sorted by category, etc., but you'll never get every coach on board with that. Some coaches enter stats on Max Preps religiously - others do not. Many coaches don't even collect stats until they watch back the game film. Some don't even collect stats beyond what gets recorded in the scorebook.

I am so distraught over how Carolina lost 2 Duke I can't even comment about anything. Sick! How about Syracuse though! Hey TML u still don't think they have 'beat anybody'...!
Ricky....'is Olean any good'...HA! C'mon man! I liked our banter but I have lost all respect!
Pat Canisius with Taplin at the 2 will b better next year. I'd b out of breath if I kept trying 2 break down that matchup.
I am taking Reggie 2 c Niagara-Sienna 2nite and Syracuse-U Conn Saturday so I will miss the Joe's TImon and Canisius Kearney games....
CC Sunday Joe's Aquainis LET'S GO!!!! Football is over I have nothing 2 do! I'll buy your dinner!

Sorry McShea is god but Olean is an hour away from me, sorry I haven't seen them.
LOL at first when you said Reggie i assumed Agbeko, but that'd take him way from 2 important games for him. I assume Reggie is your son then?
I'll be at the Joes-Timon tonight, hopefully Gibbs plays cause last time Reggie v. Gibbs was great!

Come say hi to me and CC tonight, prolly right after the game, we'll be up at the table on the stage I'm sure McShea will be ther with Lauren for Prep Talk TV

If you really want to know about some of the solid hoops teams around here but live too far away to drive and see them play is take a look at the schedules (kinda getting late for this year). I wont drive to Olean or Jamestown either ,unless its for a really important game to do a story on and cover, but when schools like that hit the road you go see them closer around here. For example, TML does some writing now for my site and though Timon/Joe’s is the marquee game, he’s going to Frontier in Hamburg to see them host Jamestown and do a write-up on them.
Posted by: PatrickMoran | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 03:50 PM
Ricky, You need to get out more. Olean worth the trip. MIG must be referring to Agbeko, his sons name is not reggie, its d****. Also the MMA bias is terrible. very good league, but it should not get the 2nd tier teams ranked as high as they are in the powewr 10 just by playing "close games" w/ top tier teams or beating each other.
Posted by: Yale Cup | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 04:10 PM
lets put it this way theres no way nfalls would lose to depew or walsh. nfalls would beat st marys 10 of 10 times. if keith really thinks either of those are better than nf then his cred is shot
Posted by: guest | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 04:44 PM
MIG obviously isn't refering to Agbeko. Agbeko has a game tonight at 7.
Posted by: Ricky | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 06:00 PM
you guys forgot.... MIG is refering to her husband, Reggie. Boy, MIG you get no respect! Enjoy your night with your sweatheart. Can't wait to hear about your next beach adventure with your family.

Well...they beat G'town in OT at home...good win but not great. When beat a team of that caliber on the road, I might buy in to the hype. Go Duke.
Speaking of beating someone....Frontier beats J'town 52-51...I brought up the fact that J'town hasn't really beaten anyone besides the out of area tourney last night...they are good but nowhere near elite as some have been saying. Frontier solidifies the #4 seed with this win...could be two big rubber games in the AA semis.
Posted by: TML1000 | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 09:33 PM
Joes beat Timon 61-55
Down 21-7 early, Joe's then went on a 32-5 run to take a 39-26 lead. Timon came back, but never quite could tie it up or take the lead.
Reggie wasn't spectacular, doesn't help that he was being manhandled by the Timon forwards, he'll need an ice bath after that one. But he did hold Dougherty/Gibbs down. Neither could have had more than 8 points.
Everyone on Joe's, who got in, played good, no one spectacular. One exception, Mark Cerza, Cerza was incredible tonight. When he got in is when Joe's began their 2nd quarter surge. He was on the board all night and had some nice feeds. Cerza is absolutly the player of the game.
Posted by: Ricky | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 09:47 PM
Not impressed with Jamestown tonight. I don't know how they beat Frontier so bad first game. They don't have the big man to handle Campbell or Crumpton.
Posted by: Dark LMT | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 10:00 PM
Joe's was a complete team tonight (no one had more than 10) while Timon was a 2 man show, Donte and Jordan Williams.
St. Joe's is is well rounded and poised and expects to win, when Timon is extremely talented, explosive and unfortunatley for them, prone to imploding. That second quarter was almost too painful to watch and I can't even imagine if you were sitting in the stands rooting for the Tigers.
When they play a good team its pretty much them expecting the other shoe to fall. They are 0-8 vs Joes and Canisius since last year.
Posted by: Patrick Moran | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 11:39 PM
...and Timon has to play at Aquinas tomorrow night 2/10. Everybody missed that on their schedules.
Posted by: Lucky13 | Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 11:49 PM
Has Timon EVERY actually WON a game? Did the plaque they gave Palano at St Joe's say 'this man lost 2 alot of good teams'...I mean every year Timon has great losses but no good wins!
Actually Reggie is a transexual I am dating. That is who I went 2 the game with. And Lucy Ricardo I am glad my Florida beach stories upset u. If u known me the more I know they bother u the more I will post them because I LIVE 2 upset people like u. It's fun, knowing I get under your skin. Tampa 4 Spring Training March 8-12th I will post details 4 u! Will suck 2 miss Regionals again.
Jamestown losing 2 Frontier...wow! I guess we have our new #10 team. ECIC is HORRIBLE! Worst year EVER 4 that league. U could put an All Star team together of all 4 leagues and Canisius and Joe's would both beat them by 40.
CC Sunday sounds good! Let's bring Reggie!!!
My Large 10: Joe's, Canisius, McKinley, Falls, Timon, Jamestown, Ken West, Riverside, Hutch Tech, Frontier. Not that they would ever let a woman vote on that poll.
I still can't believe the Bills took Torrel Troop ONE PICK b4 Rob Gronkowski went! WTH! And CJ Spillar TWO PICKS b4 Jason Pierre Paul! Buddy Nix 'I know a good football player when I c 1' ya ok that's great.
Also in Rocky 4 HOW could Rocky NOT THROW THE TOWEL! Apollo was literally getting beaten 2 a PULP! HOW did the ref not stop that fight! C'mon!

Also Canisius College is quietly putting 2gether 1 of the worst seasons in local Division 1 College Basketball history. At 1-13 in the confrence, 4-20 overall, a big shout out 2 Tom Parotta and his fine staff. I think if Hart is on fire from the outside, Canisius HS beats Canisius College by 6.
Also McDonald's HS Rosters announced (No Reggie A? What?!?!?!) and the only NY State player 2 make it was Dajaun 'I am not Derrick's son' Coleman (he IS btw no matter what he says)...so Mr Basketball should b his 4 sure. Only 1 college had 3 players on the McDonald's combined 24 man roster....not Kentucky but North Carolina.....STATE! Ha! NC State! Would b cool 2 c them good again.
Also I think Stan Weir has just about nailed down WNY Player of the year. He has by far the most points per game in WNY and has gone off for 30 almost every game lately. If he can somehow get that team 2 play Riverside in the A2 final (they would lose obviously) it would b a miracle and Keith maybe could give him the award b4 the game. I mean, that team is maybe 4-12 without him.
Plus as a returning 2nd teamer and State Federation Class A champ he had a leg up 2 begin with. So congrats Stan on closing in on the award I will make sure I push u 2 u know who every chance I get :)

ECIC I thru IV starting five: S.Wier, Taplin, Campion, Keenan, Nettles.
Posted by: Lucky13 | Friday, February 10, 2012 at 01:31 AM
Stan Weir has a small shot at WNY POY. Is he the best player in WNY? Maybe it's a toss up between him and RA, but Reggie's team would beat Stans by 20.
Posted by: Ricky | Friday, February 10, 2012 at 08:00 AM
I could put up 30 pts against Cheektowaga, Springville, Pioneer, WS East and Amherst. Might as well just give All-WNY POY.

Got two recaps up on my site from last night.. I did the Joes/Timon game with TML was at Frontier/Jamestown--turns out he was at the right place at the right time.
http://www.buffalosportsdaily.com/frontier-hits-big-shots-late-stun-jamestown/
http://www.buffalosportsdaily.com/joes-comeback-to-throttle-timon/
Posted by: Patrick Moran | Friday, February 10, 2012 at 08:36 AM
meant TML was at the Frontier/Jamestown game.
God I need to start paying attention to what I type-- I'm horrific.
PS- I didn't write this in my recap, but while the Timon fans are fun to listen to and make the games more exciting some of their chants are a little out of line. They treated Reggie like this was the WWF and he was the Iron Sheik or Nikolai Volkoff. And in the St. Mary's game earlier this season they chanted "homeless guy" to make fun of their team manager.
Sorry, but that's class-less
Posted by: Patrick Moran | Friday, February 10, 2012 at 08:38 AM
Definitely agree on the chant at the team manager. That's over the line.
I think the chants regarding Reggie were more in the good natured category than mean spirited, however, much the same way as college student sections taunt the opposition's star. I think I remember it being mentioned that the St. Joe's student section used the same chant at their football game vs. Canisius (or remember hearing it at Canisius) referring to a couple of their star players being from Canada.
Posted by: Lucky13 | Friday, February 10, 2012 at 09:32 AM
Well, yeah that is true.. I remember last year CHS fans were chanting the alphabet at Chad Kelly when he was on the free throw line to insinuate he's stupid, which admittedly I thought was very funny.
So you're probably still right. I think the "Reggie is 30" chant was funny and the "USA" chant was OK (I guess), but for a short time they chanted "Africa" and I didn't think that was cool at all.
Posted by: PatrickMoran | Friday, February 10, 2012 at 09:51 AM
I agree with M.I.G. Rocky is responsible for the death of Apollo. I was telling him the entire time to stop the fight and Tony was screaming 'throw the damn towel!!!' so Rocky made a huge mistake he will have to live with forever.
I got that meat-packing job back so gotta get back to it but good stuff here.
Posted by: Paulie | Friday, February 10, 2012 at 11:23 AM
TO: SMH & DARK TML - you are right. McShea definitely has a MMA bias. NF beat Timon and KW could beat Timon, St. Mary's and Walsh without a question. As to Stan Wier, he puts up big numbers, no doubt, but how could his team led by him lose to a Tonawanda or Amherst? He had 37 against Cheektowaga. Great. My question is why was he still in the game churning points when they were so far ahead? I guess his coach allows padding the stats as opposed to allowing other kids to play. I aasume that EA has more than 5 or 6 players on the team.
Posted by: Truth Be Told | Friday, February 10, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Isn't Tonawanda 14-1? He sat out almost the entire 4th quarter. So you obviously were not at the game. I get Reggie people are coming on here under 20 different names trying to convince Keith he should get player of the year. He won't. Did you read the story in the Buffalo News today? He barely got a mention. He did not do much vs Canisius either. Stan has to carry that team.
Let me ask you this - does it matter to you as a Soph in the State Final 4 he had 58 team combined points vs Jamesville Dewitt and Long Island Luthern? Are those teams any good Reggie - I mean Ricky - and his Uncle - I mean Truth be told? So guys bring up him leading WNY in scoring vs teams that aren't any good but don't forget what he did against teams currently ranked 1 and 2 in the State when he was on Nichols. Stan also is the only player to actually have a D1 team waiting for his services. It's great that St Peter's is interested in Reggie but Stan is going to a school that may make the NCAA this year from a conference with an RPI of 12 right now out of 31.
Stan is the clearn player of the year by any standard. Keith is smart enought to see that trust me.
Posted by: Real Truth be told | Friday, February 10, 2012 at 12:45 PM
Just put your name on the above post MIG. Don't know why you would hide from those thoughts anyway. Besides, its not like anyone other than you supports Stan for POY.
Posted by: MMA | Friday, February 10, 2012 at 12:51 PM
Stan Wier is averaging 25.6 ppg and 10.9 rpg. He has gone over 30 five times this year, including his last four games:
12/28 - 40 in a win over 2-15 West Seneca East
01/27 - 32 in a loss to 6-11 Pioneer
01/31 - 31 in a win over 2-13 Springville
02/03 - 32 in a loss to 12-5 Amherst
02/07 - 37 in a win over 7-8 Cheektowaga
East Aurora is 11-5 this season, unranked in large school poll all season, and 2-2 vs. ranked small schools. They have not faced a ranked large school.
Reggie Agbeko is averaging 19.5 ppg and 14.7 rpg.
St. Joe's 17-2 this season, ranked #1 in large schools, 5-0 vs. ranked large schools, 4-0 vs. ranked small schools, and the only team from New York State to defeat Aquinas this season.

Nice stats for both players Reggie sees tougher comp. Than Stan so his numbers would be lower..both have good basketball skills. Both help players around them become better.great wny talent

To bad Stan and Reggie were injured in the empire state games.we had a nice team just could not pull it off
Posted by: Roundman | Friday, February 10, 2012 at 02:37 PM
Re-guards to the Timon fan section.
The "Reggie's 30" chant was good and "USA" chant is typical, but the "Africa" and "Where's your papers" chants we tasteless. Also they chanted at the wrong times. I remember they did the USA chant when Oliveri was at the line and during a timeout. that just doesn't make any sense. Chants directed at a player should go when they are at the charity stripe.
Posted by: Ricky | Friday, February 10, 2012 at 04:09 PM
Wow MIG, guess you are right.Stan has to be poy. Had that 1 30 game against a winnign team. So what if they lost because he scored 30. amazing that he doing so well against such feirce competion. UB should be a breeze for him after goin off on Springville! He might never even have to learn to use his left hand!

Best part of that Cheektowaga game is 7 players scored but only 3 had more than 2 points and only 2 had more than 6, Cox had 20 and, and weir w/ 37 in a 28 point win. Come on Man! what's the deal Coach? The Cox kid is solid w/ an inside and outside game. Should be fun to watch in years to come.

What is the update on that Bishop Timon Vs. Aquinas matchup tonight?
Posted by: Panthers | Friday, February 10, 2012 at 09:34 PM
Final -- Aquinas 80 - Timon 55 .....saw it on the sec V site

Ken West looked very average in beating NT tonight. No offense other the Bailey and Campbell. I don't think they hit a shot outside of 10 ft. Zone gave them a lot of problem, they fail to get Campbell enough touches. Defensive effort was mediocre. can't see them going to far in sectionals playing like that.

Truth be Told
I agree that NF is better than St Marys and Walsh, but Im not sure that KW is. I think those games would be close. I think that KW has better top end players (Campbell and Bailey sometimes Lobdell but not nearly often enough) but very little after that. St Mary's may have a little more depth. Walsh I've only seen once and didn't seem to have much other than Whepley.

I guess we will c if I am the only person who supports Stan Weir 4 Player of the Year Saturday April 7th. But hey u guys r all right I never get the all WNY team or player of the year right I am just a dumb girl.
Just keep in mind everytime u clows rip Stan u r ripping Reggie Whitherspoon.
How come everytime u guys bring up him dropping 40 on Springville u don't talk about him dropping almost 40 on Long Island Luthern in the State Championship game?
I hear from a source Reggie isn't even in the discussion for Player of the Year. It's Stan's award 2 lose boys. Look 4 a nice article on the 2012 Player of the year soon.

PJB...both teams stunk tonight...Campbell sat most of first half with fouls...Bailey again put West on his back late and Lobdell stepped up with good 4th quarter D. KW just gets very stagnant against a zone but their athleticism always carries them out of it in the second half. Most every team has looked average this season at some points...NF looked very average when KW beat them...Jamestown did as well last night.
KW is going to play NT or Lockport in the quarters, while Falls will get the other as long as North beats OP on Wednesday...in which it would be:
1. J-town
2/3. NF/KW coin flip
4. Frontier
5. North
6. NT
7. Lockport
8. Clarence
9. OP
10. Lancaster
11. N-W
12. WSW
If OP beats North things will change between 5 and 9.

I don't get why people respect you MIG. You make irrational comments that put words in other mouths. Nobody, I mean nobody, doubts that Stan is a very good player. The problem is his team sucks. East Aurora plays lousy competition and still doesn't have a good record.
And you obviously made up that Reggie comment, because there is no way he isn't the front runner for POY.
Posted by: Ricky | Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 11:07 AM
After speaking with a coach on the Cheektowaga staff, I asked him with what he thought about Stan the man. His response, "He is not a D1 player". Reggie has done a fantastic job recruiting players, Mitchell Watt, Titus Robinson, Javon McCrea, Jarod Oldham, and a pg from Canada they have coming in next year. He also snagged Regan and Zach Filzen who transferred to the UB program. Stan will struggle at UB.
Posted by: WT716 | Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 11:27 AM
I wouldn't take a all that much stock in someone saying Stan is not a D-1 player...at the very least he is a D-1 caliber shooter, who in the correct role, can in time become a productive player. Believe me...seeing where Filzen was three years ago to the player he is today when he is in a rhythm, he's come a long way. Stan is farther along right now than Filzen was when he first came to UB.
Stan is rated an 87...Jarryn Skeete, UB's incoming pg prospect, is rated an an 83. With Oldham and Watson back, Skeete will very likely not see time next year. I expect Stan to at least see time, given the upcoming losses of Filzen and Barnett, two of UB's top 4 shooting options this season. I'm not saying this because I'm a UB fan and I hope it works out, I'm saying it because Stan will be a legit D-1 player, with the possibility, in time, to become a productive one.

@Patrick Moran did you find out where Reggie has official offers from like you said?

Does anyone have the Aquinas/Joe's score?
Posted by: Sam | Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 06:24 PM
0-0. We play tomorrow.
Posted by: jackherlan | Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 06:30 PM
Thanks and good luck Coach!
Posted by: Sam | Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 06:39 PM
Canisius 54
B Kearney 50
Adam Weir scored a game-high 21 points, while Matt MacDonald added 15 points, including three 3-pointers, in the win.
Chinonso Obokoh, the 6-10 junior, led the Kings with 19 points. Freshman standout, 6-8 Thomas Bryant, was held to nine points. BK played without Antwoine Anderson.

Great job on defense tonight by canisius should an interesting week coming up
Posted by: Roundman | Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 07:35 PM
Some random thoughts: Also saw the KW v. NT game yesterday. Both teams are going to have problems going anywhere in the sectionals. I know I am being redundant but Campbell stands around in the paint without penalty. If you are bigger than everyone else and are allowed to stand around-you better score. The refs were terrible. My opinion is that Stan Wier hit high scoring numbers at Nichols because teams were keying on the other great players on that Nichols team. I also agree with Ball hog-Stan better learn how to use his left paw. Hate to pick on them but St. Mary's is the most overated team discussed on this site.
Posted by: Truth Be Told | Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 08:50 PM
Canisius did a great job against the two big men on bishop kerney.they both played the whole game. Nice effort tonight
Posted by: Roundman | Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 09:22 PM
CC--someone in the chat on Wed. said that Antoine Anderson quit the team.
Posted by: guest | Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 09:23 PM
I did read that. Was also told from someone else that there was a different issue and that he may play again. I really don't know what the actual story is. Either way, that team without Anderson is noteworthy. However, I don't say that to take anything away from what is possibly the best Crusader win of the season. Beating a team with two future D1 players is a great achievement and a great way to represent WNY.
So to recap, St. Joe's beats Aquinas, who beats Canisius and Timon. Canisius and Timon beat Bishop Kearney, who beat St. Joe's. Gotta love high school basketball. Polls are lots of fun, but thank god for the postseason, or debates would just rage on forever.

Ricky, Division1 had a bunch of information back on the Poll Ballots-Week Three post.
Posted by: Lucky13 | Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 09:40 PM
What teams are not going to have problems going places in the sectionals then guys? There is one answer...Niagara Falls.
Posted by: TML1000 | Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 09:43 PM
Truth be told,
Agreed on St. Mary's. But the will win their 2 games and be back at states and it will only get worse, because they made it back to "states". 3-5 vs ranked schools. Beat Timon (also overrated),hutch tech & Wilson, lost to Joes, Canisius, Olean, Walsh & Depew.
Posted by: Yale Cup | Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 09:53 PM
Nice doubleheader 2day...watch Syracuse beat U Conn w 33,000 of my close friends (with a stop at Varsity Pizza 1st of course) then off w the kid 2 c UB hold off W Michigan (nice halftime chat w my namesake!)...then c Joe's tomorrow!
If Aquinas beats Joe's....Joe's will have split w Aquinas and lost 2 Kearney, Canisius will have split with Kearney and lost 2 Aquinas (without Matt Hart)...so Joe's stays #1 this week no matter what happens tomorrow but whoever wins the game next Saturday takes over #1 again the following week. Then part 3 Feb 29th.
Hey all u Stan haters I didn't c anyone comment that he dropped 34 on Pittsford Mendon currently ranked 21st in the State Class A poll...did u guys all miss that I guess? He also broke Dave Mallon's East Aurora single season scoring record after 16 games. He has now scored 30 in SIX straight games and contiunes 2 lead ALL PLAYERS in scoring in WNY doing it a level not seen since the days of Johnny Flynn....Stan IS Player of the Year take that 2 the bank guys. O and 'WT716' and assistant coach at Cheektowaga 'doesn't think Stan is a D1 player'
DID U ACTUALLY SAY THAT??? HA! Did u get his thoughts on the situation with Iran and Israel while u were at it? I'm sure we would all love 2 know what 'a coach at Cheektowaga' had 2 say about that...please tell me u meant that as a joke. Maybe the coach at Cheektowaga will take over at UB 4 Reggie 1 day? I said it two months ago Stan will b the next Zach Filzen at UB (let me guess Ricky and WT716 u have never heard of him). Can't wait 2 watch him and Will next year. Player of the year is OVER. Stan has that award won. He is the only guy going D1 in the area, returning 2nd team player, case closed.
Unless the 'coach at Cheet-Vegas' disagrees!
Posted by: McShea is God | Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 12:13 AM
Stan actually dropped 34 on Pittsford Sutherland, currently ranked 78 in NYS.
Stan is not POY. Not saying he isn't talented, but his competition is weak
Posted by: Ricky | Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 12:44 AM
MIG....enough with pushing the POY envelope for Stan Weir. The kid is talented and does need you to pub for him. Sectionals are coming up so we will see if he carries his team to the championship or not. Whether he wins it or not he will be at UB carrying that torch for RW's program end of story. I mean as you put it since he is the only player going D1 in the area, you do not have a thing to be concerned about. He has locked up the POY trophy?!?!
Posted by: Panthers | Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 01:20 AM
I look for nf to be there for the long run could be Crumptons time to shine and possible poy award

St Joes/Aquinas Cancelled today beacuse of the weather..
Posted by: mark simon | Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Its almost comical the way Mig goes aabout pumping Stan. Five in a row over 30 is amazing even if it includes Springville anfd Pioneer. No need to lie and say it was six games though. Then he pretends they beat a better Pittsford team than they really did just to make it sound better.
Leading scorer in Sec6? Maybe but could just as easily call Reggie the leading rebounder or Campion the leader in steals. Maybe Joe Lowery is the leading scorer, he goes over 30 all the time too. Joe Lowery for POY! NC will probabaly goe just as far this year but plays tougher competition. The Lowery for POY campaign starts today!!
Funny how there are only 3 things you use to make the case for Stan: the past, the future, and scoring. All about what he did with Nichols, that hes going to UB, and that he scores alot in ecic3. Great arguments. Reggie averages six less on a good team against way better competition. If he played for EA and was the only option like you say Stan is then I'm sure he could score 3 more baskets a game although they probably wouldnt be losing to teams like Pioneer and Tonawanda.
Posted by: Lowery for POY | Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 10:56 AM
I was also at the KW v NT game on Friday. NT is a physical team with enough size to match up with Campbell. NT did a good job of slowing the game down and forcing KW into playing half court basketball. KW does not want to play half court basketball, they want to get out and run. As for not being a good game, I thought it was an intense, physical affair between two schools that really don't like each other which is going to lead to sloppy basketball.

Will AQ v. Joes be rescheduled?
Posted by: Ricky | Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Ricky,
To answer your question, I do not know of what schools have made an "official" offer to Reggie. I can tell you that several MAAC and Atlantic-10 schools are very interested in him (Toledo, Niagara, Rider among them). He doesn't plan on choosing any school until the season is over; I've heard sometime in March.
Things can change because it all it takes is one school for him to determine he's the best fit for; but right now I'd be surprised if isn't playing ball at a MAAC or A-10 school next year.
Posted by: Patrick Moran | Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 11:59 AM
I know for fact that Bonnies has(or had) super interest in him. I've seen Bonnies scouts at his games more than once and I've read(maybe here) that they do in fact want him.
Posted by: Ricky | Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Game will not be rescheduled, we already play league games Tues, thurs, and Sat..
Only MAAC school that hasn't shown interest in Reggie is Canisius. A-10s include Bona and Fordham. MACs Toledo and UB. And yes he is on Oklahomas list. Choices are good.

Apparently the weather was very bad in Rochester - they cancelled.

They cancelled because they didn't want to lose again Coach! Good job pummelling them the first time.
