On Tuesday night, Timon's Donte Williams came into the game against Canisius needing just 14 points to reach the 1,000 point milestone for his career with the Tigers. In the first half, Williams scored nine points and headed to the locker room with his team trailing the Crusaders by eight, 30-22. Midway through the third quarter, Williams got loose on a break and despite a pair of defenders closely contesting, went soaring into the air to throw down wicked two-handed jam that had him swinging on the rim for safety. That dunk gave him 999 points and pulled the Tigers to within three points, 36-33. After a Crusader bucket made it 38-33, Williams drew contact on the following possession and went to the line, where he sank his first toss to reach 1,ooo. After a brief pause in the game to acknowledge his accomplishment and take a photo with his dad, and with the Timon faithful, particularly the student section known as The Militia, going berserk - the game resumed with Canisius leading by just four, 38-34.
All that energy and momentum had to carry a team to victory right?
Instead, Williams missed the second free throw and the Crusaders closed out the contest over the next 12 minutes with a 41-15 scoring advantage to win it going away, 79-49. The Crusaders improve to 9-0 in the Monsignor Martin Association with the win.
Following the celebration for Williams, Canisius finished off the third quarter on a 14-3 run that was punctuated by a 3-pointer from senior Mike Keenahan at the buzzer. After spotting Williams the first bucket of the fourth quarter, Canisius began another tear, outscoring the Tigers 22-3 over a four-minute span that saw a pair of treys from junior sixth man Josh Huffman, along with one apiece from Howard Washington and LaTerrance Reed.
Reed finished with a game-high 22 points, while Washington added 21 points.
Williams led the way for Timon, scoring 18 points. Derick Simpson scored 11 points for the Tigers, while Tyree Cobble added 10 points.
Canisius has now faced three top 10 large schools from WNY - St. Joe's (won by 22), Timon (won by 30), and McKinley (won by 27). They also own an 18-point victory over top ranked small school, Olean, along with a 14-point margin of victory over Aquinas of Section V.
The Crusaders visit St. Mary's on Friday, face St. Joe's at the Koessler Center on Sunday, and finish off its regular season at home against Timon on Tuesday.
