Troy 78, Williamsville South 39
The greatest season in school history for the Williamsville South Billies, ended with a trip to Glens Falls and a lackluster performance that left the team facing a steep deficit for most of the game.
"I told the guys today was on me, obviously we didn't prepare well enough...we've got to re-evaluate how we prepare for these things." South coach Gabe Michael said. "The seniors have been great for us."
Troy took a 10-point lead after one quarter and managed to double that lead before the teams even made it to halftime. The vaunted 2-3 zone that Troy employs made life difficult for the Billies and led to several easy buckets early. When they weren't getting easy baskets, they were making it look easy, knocking down shot after shot from the perimeter.
"They made a lot of shots," Michael said. "On the tape we saw, they didn't shoot it that well, so we thought we could pack it in."
Graham Dolan led South in scoring with 12 points, including a nice flush in the second half off a lob. Greg Dolan, who assisted the dunk, scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished four assists. Matt Foster added nine points and nine boards in the loss.
Despite the anticlimactic finish to the season, the Billies can still be proud of a season that saw them run the table in ECIC II and win a second straight sectional crown, before taking that next step that got them to Glens Falls.
"It really was a special run for those guys - when I came in at South four years ago, who would have thought we'd be here," Michael said.
