* Game of the Week - Williamsville South @ Amherst on Friday, January 20th
Williamsville South and Amherst have a natural rivalry. The two Class A schools are both located on Main Street, with just 3.1 miles separating them. There are friendships between players on both teams and between the two coaching staffs. But as basketball programs go, while they give each other the highest respect, they are not fond of each other.
Last season, the two teams were in the top five of the large school poll and spent the season disposing of opponents on their league schedule. When sectionals rolled around, both took the highest seed in their respective classes (South in A1 & Amherst in A2) and proceeded to win titles. That set up a crossover game fans waited the entire season to see and packed Buffalo State to watch. In the end, the Billies were victorious and advanced to the Far West Regional. Then the offseason brought some news...divisional re-alignments placed the two in ECIC II together, and we no longer had to wait all season to see what has now been dubbed 'The Battle of Main Street'.
Round one between the two perennial winners took place on December 12th at Daemen College after South coach Gabe Michael opted to play his home game on a college floor for the experience. As expected, an overflow crowd squeezed into the facility and two weeks into the season, created an atmosphere that felt like early March with a season on the line. Four quarters of intense basketball weren't enough on that evening. Following an overtime session, South had taken the early leg up in ECIC II.
Since that night, both teams have only looked better. The Billies are now regarded as WNY's top Section VI team and the #2 ranked large school behind Park. They've earned road victories at Timon, Williamsville North, and Cheektowaga. The Tigers are the #6 ranked large school in WNY, which makes them the second highest ranked team from Section VI. Amherst has victories this season over North Tonawanda, McKinley, Lancaster, & East.
To sum up what we have to look forward to - a Friday night rivalry game that will cram hundreds into the Amherst Jungle, with first place in ECIC II at stake, between the top two Section VI teams, and a rematch of both the 2016 overall Class A Final & an early season overtime classic! This game is so big it comes with two titles: The "Battle of Main Street' Round II and the 'Game of the Week'.
