* Game of the Week - Timon @ St. Francis on Friday, January 27th
In the 'No Nights Off' Monsignor Martin Association, Friday nights game between these two top five large schools should be a war. Hailing from the same league, these guys have long been rivals!
The teams have much about their makeup in common. Both have young coaches who have put their stamp on the program with a passionate approach. Each team has some senior leadership, along with a crop of talented underclassmen to ensure they will both remain competitive in coming years and keep these battles ultra entertaining.
Last season, they faced off twice. Both meetings went to the Tigers, but the first round required double overtime before Timon came out on top. Each school reached the Manhattan Cup semifinals in Class A, before the two were eliminated by Canisius & Park.
It's been a long time since the Red Raiders knocked off their rivals from McKinley Parkway. You have to go back to the 2010 season, before the current coaches had taken over the programs. That's good for a 14-game winning streak for Timon against St. Francis.
What makes this year's rivalry so enticing? For starters, the talent they both roll out on the court, but more so, it's the quality wins each has already earned this season. Timon has the distinction of being the squad that finally clipped Canisius, after a lengthy win streak for the Crusaders over all the other WNY foes. For St. Francis, there was a pretty major win earlier in the week at Park, who was not only #1 in WNY, but #1 in the state. They won't be anymore and have the Red Raiders to thank for that. A Friday night 'Game of the Week', South Buffalo style. As always, get there early!
