The ninth state rankings for the 2017 the season have been released by the NYSSWA. Below are the WNY teams that made the cut:

** According to the rankings...
- Not a lot to comment on this week, as not much changed since the last rankings came out a week ago.
- Something I noticed in the Class AA rankings. Aquinas has recently hosted the top two ranked NYSPHAA schools in Class AA, Fairport & Bishop Ludden. While the Lil Irish struggled big time against Fairport, they only lost to Bishop Ludden by two points. The fourth ranked NYSPHAA team is UPrep, who Williamsville South defeated. So even though WNY doesn't have any Class AA teams ranked, on a whole, I think the best from our area stack up nicely against the best NYSPHAA teams in the state.
- Park dropped from #4 to #7 in NYS Class A, while Timon moved up from #25 to #20, following the Tigers' overtime victory on Friday night.
- Williamsville South slipped back two spots in Class A, from #7 to #9, for the loss to Aquinas. Meanwhile, St. Francis, who now sits at the top of the local poll in WNY, inched up one spot to #13 in NYS Class A.
- Amherst has finally made it out of Honorable Mention in Class A, landing at #24 in the rankings. All it took was a five-point win over Sweet Home.
- A couple weeks ago, I pointed out that Section V had teams ranked ahead of Section VI in every classification, with the exception of Class B. Well, that's no longer the case. When Health Sciences lost to Middle College, they plummeted in the Class B rankings. Rochester's Early College is now the highest ranked team from NYS's Far West Region in Class B, indicating a potential sweep at regionals this year. For what it's worth, Health Sciences defeated Early College in a head-to-head meeting in late December.
- Three of the top four teams ranked in NYS Class C are from the Far West Region, with one of them being Chautauqua Lake at #3.
- Defeating McKinley doesn't carry the weight it used to. The Macks, a Class A team that won a state championship in 2013, were defeated by East last week. The Panthers moved up from #14 to #13 in NYS Class C as a result.
- Randolph is now up to #21 in NYS Class C.
