(Hakeem Dobbins scores for Middle College at the Pastor-Cooper Showcase)
Middle College 73, Cardinal O'Hara 60
In what was billed as a battle of top area small schools, it played out that way for about two and one half quarters. Tied at 44-44 midway through the third frame, Middle College dropped a 19-3 run on the Hawks that led to a 63-47 lead halfway through the fourth quarter. Hakeem Dobbins scored eight of his game-high 22 points during that stretch, while Nate Jackson kept the momentum going with an 'And 1' conversion to begin the last stanza.
Sophomore Jamond Jones continued his fast start to the season, matching Dobbins with 22 points of his own for the Kats, while Azyion Clemons added nine points in the victory. It was the first of what will be many for new Middle College coach James Kane, who credited the team's conditioning.
"They've been working since the summer," Kane said. "We're a second half team and I think their endurance really showed and played a part in it."

Tapestry 61, Kenmore West 48
The Class C Thunderhawks improved to 4-0 on the season, and have good reason to believe the wins will continue to pile up. Following the team's most recent victory over Class A1 Ken West, who was a semi-finalist in Class AA last season, Tapestry still has yet to do battle with a squad in its own classification. The other three wins came over a private school and two Class B teams.
The outcome was never even in question as the Blue Devils failed to score from the field until over two minutes into the second quarter. The Thunderhawks raced out to a 24-2 lead in the game and never saw Kenmore West 10 points the rest of the night, which didn't happen until late in the game. Tariq Eubanks led three Thunderhawks in double figures with 11 points, while Dorian Plummer and Cameron Williams each finished with 10 points.
"I'm trying to teach them about us being a family and the rest will fall into place," Tapestry coach Mike Ester said. "We're just happy to be 4-0."

Grand Island 59, MST Seneca 42
A fast start to the game and outstanding defense throughout allowed Grand Island to improve to 3-0 on the season. Derek Callen buried a 3-pointer to open the game's scoring, giving the Vikings a lead they would not relinquish, and followed it up with another bomb when he saw the ball next. Freshman Liam Sionko (10 points) added a third triple for Grand Island and then scored again to give the team an 11-2 start to the contest.
The Vikings allowed just one field goal in the second quarter to take a 32-15 lead at the break and led by as many as 24 points heading into the fourth quarter. Callen led four players in double figures, finishing with 16 points, to go with his seven rebounds and four assists.
Cam Sionko (15 points, 10 boards) and Liam Carey (12 points, 13 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles, while Carey added a pair of swats.
"We wanted to get off to a good start," Grand Island coach Ron Krysztof said. "We know Seneca throws a lot at you and if they went zone, it's a matter of us knocking down shots."
