(John Shields scores for Timon in the third quarter)
Timon 79, Olean 64
In a nonleague game pairing a top 10 large school against a top 10 small school, it was the host Tigers who had little trouble earning the victory with a solid performance over four quarters. Timon never trailed in the game and won each individual frame, never allowing the game to get closer than five points at anytime after taking a lead by as many points early in the opening quarter.
Four starters finished in double figures for Timon, led by Julian Cunningham's game-high 19 points.
Timon 20 - 15 - 22 - 22 = 79
Olean 12 - 14 - 17 - 21 = 64

Coaches Quotes
Jason Rowe - Timon
On Olean's early success attacking the basket:
"We knew they were going to be well coached and we knew they were going to be disciplined. We wanted to take them out of their comfort zone, but you can't take anybody out of their comfort zone giving up layups. Make it difficult - we were giving up way too many uncontested layups."
On Julian Cunningham's assertive play:
"He's coming along, he's playing really well. I got on him a little bit about a past game where I felt like he wasn't being assertive and since then he's doing exactly what I'm asking him to do."
On Timon's Twin Towers - Master Radford & Alero World:
"I think Master is a phenomenal player. Alero works hard and his confidence is getting better. Master and Alero really dominate on the glass - they're a tough matchup for a lot of teams and we want to continue to exploit every game that we can. Those two really make it difficult for teams to get easy shots."
Jeff Anastasia - Olean
On Timon's fast start:
"Cunningham hit a couple shots on us right away and that put us in the hole. They shot the ball better than I expected. They're a good team, I can't take that away from them."
On what his team needed to do better:
"I thought we needed to have a little bit better possessions with the basketball. I felt we dribbled a little too much tonight, and made some quick decisions which allowed them to have probably 60 possessions to our 35 possessions. It seemed like we shot the ball too fast."
My Takes:
- Master Radford's size definitely contributes to his shot-blocking prowess, but it's his anticipation and timing that truly set him apart. Dikembe Mutombo would be impressed.
- Julian Cunningham and Tahron Goudelock give the Tigers a backcourt combo that works in great conjunction with the Twin Towers in the paint. Both the guards shot the ball well from the floor and consistently look to get it inside.
- If I gave an award at the end of the season for the most improved player from the season prior, Alero World would be on the shortlist.
- Cullen Tonge and John Shields were both efficient scorers in the win.
- Timon's pregame introductions now include cutting the lights and having the starters run down the aisle of the auditorium. It's going to be really cool when that place is rocking for a big league game.
- Olean point guard Mike Schmidt is one of WNY's very best floor generals with his court vision, toughness, and ability to get into the paint.
- Josh Bihler was fearless with the ball last night for the Huskies. He has a very gritty style of play and got some finishes to go last night over the towers that left me shaking my head.
- Nine of the game's 10 starters were underclassmen, with the Huskies rolling out five juniors.
