Commentary
This sport that I spend my winter chasing and the level at which I watch it the most has changed significantly since I really dove into the scene about 12 years ago. Spacing and three-point shooting have never been more on display from the good teams, or at least the ones with shooters, and the impact of AAU on the high school game is becoming quite noticeable. But the biggest change I've seen involves player movement. Top players transferring to other teams has become like a free agency period in the offseason and the rumors that swirl around where kids are headed are tough to even keep up with. For the most part, I just roll with it, without being bothered by it. However, the transfers that are tough to swallow are when an elite player leaves the area early and I don't get to follow the remainder of their career in person. Four examples of this are Jaysean Paige (after 2011 from Jamestown), Howard Washington (after 2014 from Canisius), Joe Jones (after 2017 from Park), and Willie Lightfoot (after 2019 from Falls). I'm not trying to suggest that anyone didn't make the best decision for them, and they all landed in a great place at the Division I level (Lightfoot is certain to). I'll just point out that the 'year of prep after high school' route is one I fully support. It worked out incredibly well for guys like Sterling Taplin, Jordan Nwora, Davonte Gaines, Greg Dolan, and Ryan Funk. Noah Hutchins just took that direction. In case guys like Roddy Gayle or Jalen Bradberry were still weighing their options for the future, this schmoe is a sucker for WNY legacies.
Speaking of transfers, there were a few big names that found a new home for the upcoming season: Jalen Bradberry to Park and & John Orogun back to Park, Jaden Slaughter & Josh Haskell to St. Joe's, Shane Cercone to Canisius, Massai Graham to Tapestry, Jaedin Cottman to Middle College, and Andre Goldsmith to St. Francis.
WNY high school hoops lost some serious championship-collecting coaching following the 2019 season, and none more decorated than Olean's Jeff Anastasia (already in the NYS Basketball Hall of Fame). But if you add up the total number of sectional titles won by coaches who left after last year, the number is an astounding 28 Section VI titles between them. I can't imagine another year ever came close. Those coaches and the total number of crowns earned are as follows:
Jeff Anastasia, Olean - 14 / Sal Constantino, Niagara Falls - 5 / Mark Kensy, Maryvale - 3 / Rob Genco, Silver Creek - 2 / Des Randall, West Seneca West - 2 / Jeff Haskell, Franklinville - 1 / Mike Putney, Chautauqua Lake - 1
Last season, I told people that the player I was most excited to watch was Willie Lightfoot because I saw something in him as an eighth grader at Falls during Buff State Week that I couldn't wait to see more of. This year, I'm going to put in print the guy who I'm anxious to see, and it's a player I've never seen before. Massai Graham, now at Tapestry, was enrolled at Timon last year as a freshman, but was never able to see the floor due to ineligibility. He did play in Tapestry's opener this year - a win at Dunkirk - and by all accounts, he's a guy you're all going to want a look at. Let's just say I've already ordered a #BOOM Squad shirt for Massai, who can be found somewhere above the rim in the game he's playing in.

What's New ??
- The 2020 Manhattan Cup Champion & 2020 CHSAA Class A state champion will most certainly be new. That's because the two-time defending champion of each has left the Monsignor Martin Association to pursue a NYS Class A Federation title as a member of the NYSAIS (Association of Independent Schools).
- In addition to Park's departure, Archbishop Walsh and CCA are also no longer competing members of the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association. That brings the number of teams in that league down from 10 to seven. The seven teams in the MMA will play each other twice during the regular season.
- Timon will compete as a small school in Class B this season, as opposed to the Class A large school they've been in the past. That leaves just three teams in Class A competing for the Manhattan Cup. The teams in Class B will compete for the Richard Wojciechowski Memorial Cup, or as it certain to be most commonly referred to - The Wojo Cup! However, if any team in Class B finishes 2nd place or higher in the Monsignor Martin Association during the regular season, they would instead dance with the big dogs for the traditional Manhattan Cup.
- DaVinci will no longer have a basketball program, with its students having the option to play for I-Prep.
- The 2020 Centercourt Classic will once again feature six games over two days, on February 7th & 8th. The venue for this season's event is Williamsville North High School.
- Defending Class B2 champion Allegany-Limestone moves from CCAA I East to CCAA I West, meaning they join the same league as neighboring rival Olean.
- City Honors moves up to Yale Cup I from Yale Cup II, while Burgard & I-Prep move from Yale Cup I down to Yale Cup II.
- Springville joins ECIC III after competing in ECIC IV last season.
- Maple Grove moves down to CCAA II West, following several seasons in CCAA I West.
- The ADPRO Public/Private Challenge will no longer take place. A new event has emerged, the ECIC/NFL Challenge, and will take place the first Friday & Saturday in January at Depew High School.
- Far West Regionals will be played at Buff State on Saturday, March 14th.
- The NYSPHAA State Championships are back in Glens Falls March 20th-22nd, following a three-year hiatus.
- The NYS Federation of Champions Tournament makes its debut in NYC this season, with the games taking place at Fordham University March 27th-29th.

League-By-League
NYS Association of Independent Schools - Class A
The Park School - What do you do for an encore after earning back-to-back CHSAA Class A state titles and reaching the Federation Tournament in consecutive campaigns? You set your sights on a third straight trip to the Fed and aim squarely for Albany Academy along the way. The Pioneers on Harlem Road decided to take the independent route in 2020, meaning they are out of the Monsignor Martin Association and out of the CHSAA. As only the second Class A member of the NYSAIS, Park will play its regular season in preparation of its one chance to reach the Fed - a game with Albany Academy. After beating the Cadets for the Federation Crown in 2018, they lost to that same team in a 2019 semifinal. Now, only one will have the opportunity to reach the state's final tournament. The Pioneers return Keonjay Carter, Caleb Hutchins, Desmond Davis, and Torian Wallace who all contributed in 2019. Carter is outstanding at attacking the basket, while Hutchins is a knock-down shooter with great composure. The big news at Park is the additions of three-time All-Centercourt selection Jalen Bradberry and 6-10 John Orogun, a key part of the three-headed big man attack for the Pioneers in 2018. Bradberry is a big time scorer who can handle the ball and just what the team needed following the graduation of CC MVP Noah Hutchins. Orogun spent a year at St. Benedict's and returns to an area he should dominate around the basket. Park's departure from the Monsignor Martin caused the remaining teams in the league to opt against playing them, with the exception of St. Joe's, who wanted one chance to battle with Park. That game is scheduled for January 27th.

Monsignor Martin Association
Large Schools - CLASS A
Canisius - For the first time in over a decade, the Crusaders enter the season on a two-year Manhattan Cup drought. After graduating just four seniors and coming off a season that saw a pair of sophomores play extended minutes, Canisius is ready to rule the Monsignor Martin Association once again. A Third Team All-Centercourt guard in 2019, Dwayne Vass will be a problem for every Crusader opponent with his unique ability to move with the ball and score. Eric Kegler and Max Dowling are as tough of a tandem in the paint you will find anywhere in WNY. Junior guard Joe Ciocca cannot be left unattended on the perimeter for a second, while senior Ish Faircloth bolsters the backcourt at both ends with the experience aof a third-year varsity player. After taking a year to tune up at the varsity level as an eighth grader at Tapestry, Shane Cercone joins the Canisius varsity program as a freshman, which screams volumes about his potential. The only two freshmen I've ever seen on the floor at Canisius under Kyle Husband were Howard Washington and Stafford Trueheart.
St. Joe's - Expectations are soaring on Kenmore Avenue for a team that returns plenty and ended the season with a performance that set the tone for the future. Despite needing a play-in win to reach the Manhattan Cup playoffs, the Marauders earned it and then nearly did the unthinkable by beating Park after leading them in an epic semifinal for the majority of the game. Joe's has three starters back from a year ago and gained a pair of key additions to round out the first unit. Greg Poland returns and should be one of WNY's top big men, while Justin Glover and Daesean Ashley will share backcourt duties for a second season together. The arrivals of Josh Haskell (Franklinville) & Jaden Slaughter (City Honors) give the team a balanced five that could be a problem for others. The Marauders will start four players who have earned All-Centercourt Top 60 honors, led by a Top 60 high school coach in WNY in Gabe Michael.
St. Francis - Three key starters from the 2019 team that suffered a heartbreaking situation just seconds from a Manhattan Cup Final are gone. Fortunately for the Red Raiders, they developed a core behind them. Amiel Collins is coming into his junior year having started 30 games already and looking for a breakout season. He plays the perimeter at 6-4 with a nice outside shot and the ability to get to the rim consistently. David Bartholomew, who has D1 interest from multiple schools for football, has bulked up and at 6-6, needs to dominate the paint & spread the floor with is outside shooting ability. Junior sniper Peyton Consigli has improved his ball handling and finishing at the rim and gritty senior Jack Bickerstaff is a slasher who makes the little things happen. Malik Thompson and Andre Goldsmith, an athlete to keep an eye out for, are transfers who will see time.
**********************************************
Small Schools - CLASS B
Cardinal O'Hara - The Hawks are the defending CHSAA State Champions in Class B and it took Joe Girard III, the greatest scorer in NYS basketball history, to end their season short of a Federation title. Coming into this season, reigning Coach of the Year Tony Pulvirenti and O'Hara aim to keep the good times rolling into the month of March once again behind the leadership of lock-down defender Avion Harris, the program's lone senior. Sophomore Jimmie Green was a postseason contributor and should take a big step up, while sharpshooter Henry Smith returns. Tyreke Hopkins, Keiyan Clarke, and Nikola Bosic are all key transfers expected to be part of the rotation, with Bosic being an intriguing 6-6 shooting talent to keep an eye out for. Jaden Washington adds scoring punch to the team after netting 20 per contest on the JV team in 2019.
Nichols - After reaching the final and falling to eventual state champion Cardinal O'Hara, the Vikings suffered a sizable turnover. With only three returning varsity players back, the newcomers will need to step up big in a most talented league. Senior Aidan Horan will be relied on to do it all, including being the team's unquestioned leader. He has the skills to impact the game on both ends of the floor and averaged 14 PPG with 8.7 boards a night as a junior. Returning guards Jesse Adamu and Hugh Purks will handle the ball and be counted on to provide experience in the backcourt.
Timon - Timon will seek your rebound from a tough season a year ago and moves into Class B. They are very young, but hungry to prove they belong among the top teams in the league. Returning are sophomores Kevin Thompson and Kamar Goudelock, as well as junior Leo Camilloni and bruising center Alex Reinhardt. Junior transfer Jamyier Patton should make an immediate impact with the Tigers this season.
St. Mary's - With a lack of size across the board, Lancer Nation will rely on good decision making and out-working opponents this season. Luke Szablewski , Peter Duane, Jerry Stachura, Trent Rumley, and Brandon Thome all saw time in the starting lineup at some point last season, so team chemistry could work in their favor as they look to surprise some teams.

Section VI
YALE CUP I
Middle College - The back-to-back Yale Cup champs from Middle College marched through the postseason and reached the Class C state championship game for the fifth time in the program's 11-year history. The Kats enter the 2020 season priding themselves on being one of the hardest working teams in WNY and have a legitimate shot at consecutive appearances in the state title game for the first time. The backcourt returns All-Centercourt standout Jamond Jones, along with All-Centercourt defenders Keyunte Jones and Devonte Prince. Keith Brown is back in the frontcourt and he will be joined by Anthony Smith and Jaedin Cottman, who arrives from Cardinal O'Hara. Malik Meadows, Isiah Smith, and Deshoni Pickett will all see time for the Kats, who play a play a very tough schedule that should have them tuned up for a another postseason charge.
East - The Panthers earned a regular season split with Middle College in 2019 and have all the talent back to do it again. Led by 2018 state champion Danny Carter, along with 6-6 David Hughes & Dontae Miller, East should be one of the areas top large schools after moving up to Class A2 this year - a challenge the team is excited about. Head coach Starling Bryant, the all-time winningest coach in the City of Buffalo, will be inducted into the NYS Basketball Hall of Fame at season's end. Hands up!
McKinley - With a good mix of experience and talented youth, the Macks are going to be a fast and entertaining team. Veterans Jesse Snow and Jahmal David-Lewis are important as seniors and as leaders, while Koran Askia and Dejuan McGee will be asked to take another step forward after playing in 2019. Sophomore Elijah Whithead and freshmen Kevin Borden & Jahaad Martin will provide youthful energy. They'll be battle tested early with St. Francis, Canisius, O'Hara & East all looming in December, but McKinley will become a better team as the season progresses.
South Park - Third year senior Anthony Mack, a lightning quick guard and tough defender, leads the Sparks into battle this season. Jason Armstead and Davon White are also back for their senior seasons and two of the top players at South Park. When they stay disciplined and are executing, the Sparks have shown they can compete with anybody. They once again find themselves in a crowded room in both a competitive league race and in a deep Class A2.
City Honors - The last two seasons have ended the same way for the Centaurs - at the hands of Olean in the postseason. If City Honors is to reach Buff State in Class B1 again in 2020, they'll need big seasons seniors Kevion Taylor and Jerimiah Chapman. Sophomore Caleb Chapman will play an even bigger role for the team this season. A move up to Yale Cup I from Yale Cup II will have Honors beyond well exposed to the top competition awaiting during sectionals.

YALE CUP II
Olmsted - The Owls reached the Class B2 Final last season and it marked the fourth consecutive season that head coach Andy Busch has guided the team to its final game at Buff State. They will no doubt be a competitive team once again this year. A trio of starters return, led by first team Yale Cup II player Marciano Lamar, who excels in scoring but can do a little bit of everything. Renard Siders and Lawrence Jackson are the other starters back and will be big keys to success this year.
MST Seneca - The Wolves are always at or near the top of the Yale Cup II race and head coach Scott Kirsch is looking to have more of the same this year with a new set of leaders. Seniors DeVante Simmons, Isiah Reid and Devotie Pompey will be counted on for production, as newcomers Terrell Craig, Nasir Newton and Kayshawn Lewis step up to the varsity level. The team will look to play good defense and work hard the whole game to produce wins.
Bennett - The Tigers returned to varsity basketball in 2019 and first year head coach Khalil Cottman guided his group all the way to the Class C2 Final against Randolph at JCC. The team returns all but two players from last year's Class C2 runner-up, led by team MVP Davon "Big Country" Scott and defensive ace Jake Pullins. Now lurking in a bigger & tougher jungle after a move up to Class B1, the Tigers won't be able to sneak up on teams with their speed and shotgun transition offense and hope make more strides in their second season back, beginning at Olmsted on December 4th.
Buffalo Arts - Looking to build upon its first round sectional win in 2019, the Cavs are a mix of experience & youth (two freshmen & an 8th grader). Led by three returning seniors in Jayden Robinson, Charles Slobert and Lutrell Reed, they'll look to be a stingy team at the defensive end with an offense built upon ball movement to create chances.
Riverside - With no seniors in the building at Riverside, they'll will be featuring a squad of mostly sophomores and a few juniors this year. New head coach Brandon Sausner is excited to watch the kids in this program grow together and see a real chemistry develop among the more dedicated athletes. Dan Maku has made some significant strides over the summer and should be a top performer on the team. The Frontiers are the only team in City of Buffalo with enrollment numbers placing them in Class D.

ECIC I
Jamestown - Following a season without an appearance at Buff State in Class AA, the Red Raiders enter the 2020 season as a work in progress with just three seniors. However the youth on the team is talented, plays very hard, and has chemistry together. The team is led by 6-3 junior Demarri Jones, a forward who earned Second Team All-ECIC I last season. Junior Elijah Rojas runs the point and returns to the starting lineup, along with 6-3 junior Simeon Leeper. Rounding out the projected starting five are 6-3 freshman Trey Drake and 6-7 sophomore Jaral Farmer. Some of the nonleague games lined up for Jamestown include Niagara Falls, Health Sciences, McKinley, and a season opener against Tapestry.
Orchard Park - In their first season under head coach Chris Frankowski, the Quakers reached Buff State in Class AA and put a real scare into eventual state senifinalist Niagara Falls, losing by just seven points. With 11 players returning from that squad, hopes around the program are as high as ever. Another difficult nonleague schedule was assembled to challenge the team, including a trip to play at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland and a game against the defending CHSAA state champions from Park. Key seniors like Brad Fowler, Chase Kline, Tino Mancabelli, Jack Sharp, and Ethan Swiatek will be the catalysts, relying on versatile defense and pushing the tempo. The depth of this team is its biggest strength.
Williamsville North - The defending league champions in ECIC I came within a Willie 'Freaking' Lightfoot performance of the ages from claiming the Class AA title at Buff State last March. The Spartans lost size, strength, and experience to graduation, and are largely replacing it with smaller & quicker players with something to prove. Breht Swiech, a smooth shooter & scorer, returns to the starting lineup at North. He's joined by key returnees Scott Hopkins, Michael Washington, David Bass, Gilad Symons, and Evan Richter. Kyle Finn, Conor Murphy, and Jacob Bruno are the key additions to the varsity team. North is the host school for the 2020 Centercourt Classic and will take on Jamestown in the event on Friday, February 7th.
Lancaster - GianLuca Fulciniti enters his 3rd year on varsity and his veteran leadership paves the way for a Legends team with seven returning players. Joe Harrington is also entering his 3rd year on varsity as well, and the sophomore is becoming a difference maker after tremendous strides over the off-season. After successful junior year, Trevor Reformat is eager to show that we will not be out worked. Lancaster is an internally motivated squad with a very strong core that is willing to sacrifice - the type of team that can play with anybody.
Clarence - The Red Devils came very close to both a league title and an appearance at Buff State in Class AA last season. Despite some key graduation losses, Clarence returns three starters in Zach Ianello, Cole Harris, and JD Brooks. A collection of guys who didn’t see a ton of minutes last year as juniors are ready to step up, along with sophomores Scott Raymond, Garrett White, and Julius Perry, all who've shown steady improving throughout the preseason.
West Seneca West - The back-to-back Class A1 champions welcome in new head coach Stan Wier, who was a scoring machine during his playing days and earned the 2012 CC MVP. Nate Ryniec was a vital piece of the two championship runs and is back for his senior season, where he'll continue to give teams fits with his shooting. Fellow seniors Dillon Weir and Daric Rivera also played key minutes in the 2019 title run and give the Indians a solid core. West will stake their identity on relentless and selfless play, while focusing on the fundamentals.
Frontier - The Falcons return six seniors to a team that lost all five starters, which accounted for 80 % of scoring & 90% of rebounding. Seniors Tanner Fadale and Nate Hoellig both saw significant time last season and will be looked upon to lead team in scoring, along with juniors Brandon Okie and Conor Foley. Senior Avery Kuryak is the team's top defender. Frontier is inexperienced & lacks size and will rely on outside shooting as improvement develops throughout the season.
**************************************
ECIC II
Amherst - Winners of seven division titles in the last eight years, the Tigers look ready to defend once again. Led by Jaylen Stewart, a First Team All-ECIC II guard, Amherst returns nine seniors to a deep squad ready for a return trip to the Class A2 Final. Nick O'Neil was a standout teaming in the backcourt with Stewart in 2019. Fellow seniors Noah Woldu, Aden Clemente Marcus Hall, Myles Cooper, Imari Jenkins, Gavin Warren, and Rashawn Allen all contributed to the run last year and made an impression. Junior Jeff Koch has come along nicely for the team and freshman guard Nick Moore is ready for the next level and will be seeing the court.
Williamsville East - The Flames are coming off a season that saw them reach the A1 Final for the first time since 2012. With 10 returning players and four starters back, they have high expectations. Third team All-Centercourt selection Cal Shifflet, who led Section VI schools in blocks and was second in rebounding is a true do-it-all player. Sophomore Max Schneider returns at the point after adding some muscle mass and improving his jumper. Kevin Early is always dangerous on the perimeter after leading the team in 3-pointers made and Mr. Hustle, Yusuf Hashmi, is back to shake things up for East.
Sweet Home - Looking to follow up on last season's appearance in the Class A1 semifinals at Buff State, the Panthers will continue their aggressive running style and use their length to make things difficult for their opponents on the other end. Third year player DaeQuan Hill is one of the best bigs in the area and represented the Buffalo area BCANY team this summer. Jamel Lucas is a four-year player, who along with Hill, will be relied upon heavily to carry the load.
Williamsville South - The Billies finished the 2019 campaign just shy of reaching Buff State in Class A1 in head coach Mike Trzybinski's first year with the program, suffering a heart-breaking loss to eventual champion West Seneca West. This season, South slides into Class A2, led by senior guard Mike DiGiulio, who earned All-Centercourt Honorable Mention as a junior. Senior forward Kingsley Mitchell is an athlete who will be relied upon for secondary scoring, while the addition of sophomore guard PJ Mairiana will certainly bolster the backcourt.
West Seneca East - The Trojans went 13-7 during the regular season in 2019 that included a big win over district rival and eventual Class A1 champ West Seneca West. East hopes to emerge from the grind of ECIC II and make a appearance at Buff State behind the backcourt play of senior Trent Cordone (All ECIC II 2nd Team) and 8th grader Jaiden Lewis, who is going to be a special one. Andrew Radka offers all around front court contributions for the Trojans.
Hamburg - Head coach John Reinholz enters his third year with the Bulldogs and six seniors have been on varsity with him during that span. Led by three-year starters Nate Severson, Andrew Genzel, and Max Haney, look for a defensive-minded team that is aggressive at that end with rebounding ability to get us out in transition.
Starpoint - Gil Licata takes over as head coach of the Spartans after enjoying much success in coaching before his focus shifted to his children. But with an empty nest at home, Licata will seize another opportunity to lead and has assembled an all-star cast of support within his staff. Former UB player Tony Watson will coach the JV team, while former Cheektowaga varsity coach Luke Vogel runs the modified team. Licata's varsity assistants include Tom Sarkovics, who coached the girls at Starpoint, and former Buff State & Will South standout Grace Licata. The team will be led by captains Joe Dell'Oso, Joe Carlson, and Dexter Brooks.

ECIC III
Iroquois - The Chiefs have reached Buff State in back-to-back seasons under head coach Todd Kleitz, both seasons in Class A2. This year, Iroquois drops into Class B1 and despite the loss of seven seniors, a third consecutive visit to the big stage looks likely. Three ECIC III all-star players return, led by sophomore floor general Trey Kleitz, who was First Team All League and an All-Centercourt Honorable Mention pick after averaging 11 points and nine assists per contest as a freshman. Kleitz will be relied on to score more this year, along with fellow First Team All League selection Matt Matla. The senior led the team in scoring with 17 points per game in 2019. Junior Nick Bowen played very well as a sophomore and new addition Zech Franklin (6-7) will help in the middle, alongside 6-5 senior Nick Partsch.
East Aurora - The Blue Devils reached the Class B1 Semifinals last season with just three seniors on the team. While the graduation of team captain Noah Denz will be felt, there's a solid core intact that makes them favorites to be back in the same place this year. Will Covington scored 12.3 per game as a junior and 6-7 Ian Moog added 6.5 points per night. Jimmy Tanner is the team's toughest defender, Matteo Duennebacke adds some size in the paint at 6-3, while Dominic Phillips and Tage Hoeg move into larger roles this season.
Maryvale - After staring at Maryvale as a player, Ryan Mohr moves into the role of head coach to replace Mark Kensy, who delivered over 400 wins during his extended tenure. With only 3 players returning to the varsity, the Flyers will use the early portion of the scrimmage and game schedule getting up to speed. Expect to see a long and athletic team that plays fast, but under control, with the goal to be playing their best basketball by sectionals. Senior Xaier Mitchell is a three-year varsity player who averaged 11 points and 9.5 rebounds per game last season. Guard Andrew Dockery and forward Javon Smith also return. First year senior Jayden Morgan has looked promising during preseason.
Depew - The Wildcats were a balanced team last season and return PJ Burns, Nathan Kulesz, Daivon March, and Christian Pagano, who combined to average 32 points per night in 2019. Depew is carrying a pair of freshmen on the varsity squad this year in Jemerey Clark and Mohamed Khalil.
Springville - The Griffins move up from ECIC IV this year, and will look to replace the leadership & scoring of Third Team All-Centercourt standout Mason Goodridge, who is currently playing at Alfred, with a young core group. The team has two returning starters in Austin Boies and Alex Elkins, along with two returning seniors, Nick Sullivan and Chris Smith. Other players expected to contribute are Eric Copeland, Eric Pruitt, and Cyrus Fisher, as Springville tries to play with an up-tempo mentality.
Lake Shore - The Eagles will a very guard oriented team, looking to use our speed and skill to run the floor. Returning players include Zach Evans, Tyler Hassell, Thomas Michael, Spencer Kwilos, Zach Cervola and Jamison Solecki. Colin Herzog transferred in from Canisius and should work his way into the starting lineup. Efrain Baretto came back out for basketball and is a welcomed addition, while Keith White comes up from JV and will bring reinforcement to a strong backcourt.

ECIC IV
Lackawanna - The mission for the Steelers is to regain the dominance of past years with a simple philosophy - do your job, focus on the fundamentals, and play fast with discipline. Led by Edrick Steward, who skipped football to refine his hoops skills, Lackawanna has a pair of starters and its seventh man back. Ali Aldari is an intelligent point guard, Jose Perez & Aijah Turner are shooters, with Turner leading the JV team in scoring last year. Donoven Jimerson offers size, along with a small forward skill set and De'Marion Johnson returns for his senior season after playing at Maritime in 2019.
Cleveland Hill - With several new faces on the roster, the Golden Eagles will need to rely on experienced players like senior Jayden Krueger, who led last season's team in three-point scoring and can be a game changer. Senior Thomas Johnson provides solid defensive play and the team hopes his improved his court awareness & anticipation lead to an improved transition game. Junior Charlie Meredith is a leader that has worked hard and will be the primary ball handler at the start of the season. The team lacks physical size, so working to gain position and reduce offensive opportunities for opponents will be a focal point.
JFK - Senior Alan Suarez, a 3-year varsity player, is the only returning starter for the Bears, . Senior forward Kenny Avery appears ready to step into a prominent role, both offensively and defensively. Junior point guard Josh Knox will have the ball in his hands a lot. With a bunch of new faces, developing chemistry as the season unfolds should keep JFK in the top half of the division.
Tonawanda - The Warriors return the five players who started most of the games in the second half of the season last year. The middle will be manned by senior Dave Perry. ECIC IV First Team guard Trevin Boling will run the point and be joined in the backcourt by Mike Tantillo. Juniors JJ Velazquez and Travis Davis will fill the forward positions, and both were ECIC IV Honorable Mentions in 2019.
Holland - The Dutchmen return eight players from last year's team that made it to JCC and lost in the semifinals. Nolan Perry, Josh Ostrowski, Jon Nellis, Noah Kirsch and Tyler Scheffller are the players Holland will rely on a lot in hopes of a return to a Section VI Final Four. Expectations coming into this season are to be a deep, experienced team that plays an aggressive and uptempo style of basketball.

Niagara Frontier League
Lew-Port - The Lancers won the overall Class A title last season, ending a 41-year sectional drought. With success comes expectations, and they've never been higher at Lew-Port than they are coming into this season. Returning First Team All-Centercourt sophomore sensation Roddy Gayle will be asked to do a little of everything as his game continues to flourish. Jalen Duff enters his freshman campaign as the team's only other returning starter and will play a much larger role this season with the ball in his hands even more after showing great composure in his first varsity season. Jack Bernstein can light it up from long range and gives the team a solid third scoring option, while transfer Mehki Starks brings athleticism and a strong defensive mentality to the program.
Niagara Falls - A whole lot has changed at Niagara Falls since March, head coach Sal Constantino won his fifth Class AA title with a Wolverines team led by sophomore Jalen Bradberry and freshman Willie Lightfoot. Constantino resigned as coach and is replaced by longtime assistant Brent Gadacz. Bradberry transferred to the area's top team the last two seasons in The Park School, while Lightfoot left for a prep school in Kansas. A new era at Falls will begin under the on court leadership of guard Jaemon Turner, an All-Centercourt Honorable Mention pick last year. Taylor Sanders returns after losing his season to injury last year and will counted on heavily. Joe Palka, Faybion Prather, and Arien Robinson all saw minutes with the team last season and are back in the fold.
North Tonawanda - The Jacks were very competitive last season, winning 12 games with overtime losses to Lockport and Middle College, and a six-point loss to Lew-Port. With eight talented seniors returning from last season, including All-NFL players Dante Moultrie and Noah Fox-Stoddard, they are beyond battle-tested and anxious to get started. The team's goal this season is to close and finish, while having fun.
Kenmore West - The Blue Devils will strong team basketball and getting out in transition as they look to rebound from last season. Third year starting point guard Zac Boyes will be counted on as the team's leader. Sean Hargrave started the last eight games as a freshman and enters this season standing 6-5, while Jacob Alvarez averaged 15 PPG over his last three starts.
Lockport - The Lions reached the Class AA semifinals at Buff State in 2019, led by Second Team All-Centercourt selection Malik Brooks. After losing one of the top scores in team history, this year's Lions will need to find scoring. Expect a young team with the ability to fight through adversity and many juniors needing to take a lead role. In a balanced league, Lockport will look to get out and run with a strong emphasis on defending. Point guard Ceion McDowell will have to control the game at both ends, along with needing major contributions from last years starters Anthony Haak and Josh Cooper for the team to have success.
Niagara Wheatfield - Sophomore guard TJ Robinson started all 23 games last year for the Falcons, who reached Buff State in Class A1, averaging 13 PPG as a freshman. He will be joined in the backcourt this year by a freshman who will run the point in Alexander Fletcher. Returning starter Ben Salomon and Andy Devantier are each back, and the Falcons will also rely heavily on 6-4 senior Joey Woroniecki.
Grand Island - The Vikings will miss graduated four-year starter, three-time First Team NFL, & two-Time All-Centercourt Honorable Mention Cam Sionko. But life after Sionko is more of the same with junior brother Logan, another sniper, assuming reins. He'll be in a combination effort with senior Trevor Knight a three-year varsity player and Ben Moskala to provide the team with stability and leadership. State volleyball champs Jon Simpson, who looks to be a force on the defensive end & provide key outside shooting, and Zach Cramer's all-around game, will be valuable additions.
CSAT - Looking to their senior core for leadership, the Eagles will be led by Amir Morris, Pierre Gabart, Xavier Alvarez and Quincy Drake, who all expected to have big seasons for the team. Jorden Bynes and Greg Sanders should be two major sophomore contributors for CSAT, and Jonah Idin brings the intensity at the defensive end.
Kenmore East -A very athletic squad takes the court for the Bulldogs, who will play up tempo to create turnovers and turn them into points. Amari Gordon, Iasish Walker, Dominic Ferguson, and Marcus Diaz are among the top players for a balanced team that could have a different scoring leader each night. Coach Jim Badgley also has the benefit of turning to his bench, as depth is a real strength for Ken East this season.

Niagara-Orleans
Medina - The Mustangs have enjoyed much success at the top of the N-O in recent seasons under head coach Tom Forrestel, winning four consecutive league titles. Filling the leadership lost to graduation, reestablishing solid point guard play, and identifying the quality of our depth will be the early season focal points in an effort to stay on top. The team has a solid nucleus of players returning that saw the court a lot last season in three-year varsity players Nate Sherman & Brian Fry, along with Tyler Chinn, Joe Cecchini, and Jarin Rhim.
Newfane - Returning four starters and the four leading scorers from last season's squad who finished tied for 2nd place in the N-O, the Panthers appear poised to make a make a run in league and sectional play (Class B2). Deuce Capen nearly averaged a double-double (11.9 PPG & 9.5 RPG) as a sophomore, while Garrett Srock gave them 9 points and 7 rebounds a contest. Starting junior point guard Sam Capen grew five inches, had a terrific summer, and is ready to break out. Josh Everett is one of the areas best defenders, while the emergence of Michael Carmer should bolster an already strong frontcourt.
Albion - The Purple Eagles have good reason for optimism heading into the 2020 season with five returning seniors, four of which will be playing their third year on the varsity team. Deyonci Farley, a talented athlete with shooting range, leads that group. Combine that with a good core of juniors coming off an 18-1 season and they could be dangerous if they learn how to play and communicate together. The goal is to stay focused and play like a team and emphasize defense.
Wilson - As one coach in the league put it while breaking down the landscape, Wilson is Wilson...meaning they will be tough, physical, and improve all season. The Lakemen have seven returning seniors and plenty of depth, so expect to see a deep rotation. Luke Bradley, Alex Martinez, Julian Andreola, and Brayden Thompson are all experienced team leaders who will set the tone for the team.
Akron - A young group that has eight juniors and only three seniors, the Tigers do boast experience with many of those juniors playing last year as sophomores. They will be led by 3rd year starting point guard Adam Mietz, the team leader in points, rebounds, assists, and steals last year. He's joined in the backcourt by fellow three-sport athlete Mitchell Holtz, who was second in scoring. Senior guard Gage Willis will surprise some with his defense & athleticism, while forwards Jake Mazza and David Kalinowski are hardworking and selfless.
Roy-Hart - Senior guards Reed Albee and Canyon Wood are back, along with forwards Peyton Rhinehart and sophomore Gavyn Boyle. Albee ran the point last season and looks to take another step this year. Wood's shooting allows the Rams to space the floor. The team has a ton of size to go with Rhinehart & Boyle, as Tommy Ragonese, Rhett Goodwin, and Aiden Petrie all add length and rebounding to the team. Jon Gillings and freshman Jamel Johnson Jr. round out the backcourt for a team that can play nine deep.
Barker - Coming off a disappointing season, the Raiders have turned the page and are excited for a fresh start. The team leaders are Hunter Callen, junior big man Shane Gerhardt, and junior guard Joey Brandt. The bench is an area the team will lean on to provide a spark, defensively. This season the plan is to simply hang their hats on the defensive side of the basketball and make everything tough for our opponents through hard work and attention on individual jobs.

CCAA I West
Allegany-Limestone - Moving into CCAA I West from CCAA I East, the Gators arrive with a squad capable of winning the division in year one. Coming off a Class B2 title, Allegany-Limestone nearly brings the whole farm back. The key will be replacing the leadership of Sam Flanders and Conner Golley's rebounding. Casey Curran is a standout talent and had a great summer, that included playing for the BCANY Hoopsfest team. CCAA I All-Stars, Ben Giardini and Michael Wolfgang return to the starting lineup for the Gators, while Ty Curran, Gus Napoleon, and Jayden Gustafson will step into bigger roles. Winning the league and repeating as Class B2 champs are both very attainable for this group.
Olean - A fascinating transition awaits in Olean, with the retirement of all-time winningest WNY coach Jeff Anastasia and the graduation of 10 seniors, which included all five starters from the team that won 25 consecutive games en route to a state semifinal appearance. That may seem like a daunting situation for new head coach Tim Kolasinski to step into, and it is. However, Kolasinski has been with the program for several years and has always been credited as being a big part of the incredible success that Olean basketball achieved and sustained. Seniors Covi James, Dan Klein, and Jah' Karee' McClain will lead an uptempo attack for the Huskies.
Fredonia - The Hillbillies look to build upon their trip to Buff State last season as they return a host of athletes from that team. Junior Tyler Putney, sophomore Nick Whitfield, and seniors Alec Schrader & Kaleb Rybij lead a balanced Fredonia squad. The team has put together a challenging nonleague schedule to compliment the nightly grind they'll face in league play.
Southwestern - The Trojans should look like a brand new team this year, with Mitch Pascarella being the lone returning starter. Sophomore Aidan Kennedy is also back with the team and has good size. Last season's reserves, along with strong players up from JV will definitely have to step up and play a more significant role, while a couple transfers to the school could find their way into the mix.
Chautauqua Lake - Alex Reyda takes over for the Thunderbirds, formerly a coach of varsity girls basketball at Ripley for 5 years where he earned a trip to the NYSPHSAA state semifinals. There are two returning starters from last year in Nate Adams and Luke Waters, who are both are talented players and leaders. The team will benefit from 10 juniors coming up from a very successful JV team. Reyda calls this group very intelligent and highly coachable, with competitive and productive practices. Chautauqua Lake will stress pressure on defense and an attack mentality on offense with great court spacing.

CCAA I East
Randolph: The defending champions from Class C2 return four starters and look poised for a repeat in 2020. Three-time CCAA I East league MVP, Second Team All-Centercourt, and First Team All-State in Class C, Tyler Hind enters his senior season with 2,000 career points well in sight after averaging 25 points and six assists last year. Sophomore big man Gabe McCoy, who averaged a near double-double as a freshman, tough defender Kaleb Steward, and Branson Morrison, who hit 45 threes in 2019 are all back. Along with the reserves Ty Rosengren and Issac Hind, who both played significant minutes in all twenty games, the Cardinals are also the team to beat in CCAA I East.
Salamanca - With 90% of its scoring back from last year, along with depth and size in the frontcourt for the first time in a while, it looks to be the most talented group that head coach Adam Bennett has had at Salamanca. The backcourt features two returning CCAA I All-Stars in Aaron George (17 ppg) and Isaac Brown (13.5). This Warriors team is a hard-working group that plays an up-tempo style with pressure defense.
Portville - The Panthers are a senior laden team carrying eight seniors, however just five members of the squad hold prior varsity experience. Portville will rely on its size, length, and athleticism to earn some early wins as the on-the-job training seasons some on the newcomers.

CCAA II West
Panama - Just seconds from advancing to the NYSPHAA Class D state championship game, the Panthers fell in dramatic fashion on a four-point play. It ended an impressive postseason run that included a regional win over a tough Belfast team. Two starters return from that group, in Cameron Barmore and Gerrit Hinsdale. Some new additions to the varsity line up will be senior Braden Cook, junior Connor Cooper, and sophomore Cooper Brown. Head coach Ed Nelson has done a fine job with this program and even overcame late starts to the season with the success of the football program. Panama faces a tough league and will be battle-tested by season's end.
Westfield - With five seniors and three of the top five double-digit scorers back, the Wolverines should be one of the top teams in league play and Class C2. Ryan Jafarjian is a slasher who gets to the basket, Michael Johnson is a good shooter & ball handler, and Andrew Baribeau has good hands & footwork which will present a matchup problem at 6-5 & 260. Nathan Culbreth is an unselfish 6-3 point guard and Dylan Scriven defends, rebounds and can score the ball while doing all the little things.
Brocton - Collin Mulcahey enters his second year as the head coach at Brocton looking to build off success from last year and have several key returners. Connor Dispense, Seth McFadden, Michael Steward, Nick Putcher, and Gabe Morello are all back and will look to band together after the team lost starting point guard Caleb Chelton for the season to a grueling leg injury during his final football game. The Bulldogs' goal is to win at least 1/3 of their league games - a school policy in order to make the playoffs this year.
Cassadaga Valley - Cody Jacobson took over as head coach of the Cougars just before the season and with only one returning player from last years eight-win team, he'll have his work cut out for him. Staying patient and understanding team goals take time & dedication will be the key.

CCAA II East
Ellicottville - The Eagles went 10-0 in the division and have enjoyed four consecutive league titles in CCAA II East. With six of the rotation's top seven back, a fifth straight banner looks probable. Leif Jimerson, Wyatt Chudy, Clayton Rowland (all 2nd Team All-League), and Jordan Grinols (League HM) all started at Ellicottville in 2019. The team also has players up from JV who are expected to contribute immediately. That means a deeper bench for the Eagles, who will be able to play fast and use athleticism as an advantage.
Franklinville - The Panthers move up to play in Class C2 during sectionals this year and return three starters from a year ago, led by Logan Frank. Zack Wolfer will be counted on for leadership at both ends, while sophomore Blake Frank is back as a starter and should continue to improve. Franklinville will get a boost from the addition of Kameron Ramadhan, now eligible for play after coming over Walsh during last school year last.
North Collins - The Eagles expect a big year from their big man, Tyler Robinson. Christian Loretto is a good ball handler who runs the point and will look to get the ball inside to Robinson when he can, along with setting up the likes of Mitchell Warsaw, AJ Puntillo and Dominic Fricano who all played last year as sophomores and will have to step up this season. Brody Klawinski and Hunter Petit each return to add depth for North Collins.
Cattaraugus-Little Valley - The Timberwolves will be a young team this year, with just four returning varsity players and no seniors. They'll rely heavily on the shooting of junior guard Nick Savidge and sophomore point guard Josh Halterman to lead the team.

Charter Schools
Health Sciences - After consecutive trips to the NYSPHAA state semifinals in Class B, the Falcons were moved up to Class A2 last season, where they came within a Trent Scott buzzer-beater of taking Lew-Port to overtime in an epic quarterfinal battle. The Health once again finds itself moved up to Class A2 and will be led by third year floor general Javaughn 'Jonezy' Jones, one of the best in the area and poised to have a breakout season. The team has size inside with a pair of seniors, 6-7 Deshaun Brown and 6-4 Tyler Smith, along with two more guys who play bigger than they stand in 6-2 senior forwards Daciare Riley & Jabari Spencer. Yehshua Lee gives the team some added backcourt depth after coming over from Cardinal O'Hara.
Tapestry - The Class C1 Finalists from 2019 have plenty back to make another run at a title and might just finish the job this season. Tariq Eubanks enters his junior season as one of the best floor generals in all of WNY. He's Mr Excitement at both ends and worked all summer to take his game to another level. The arrival of Massai Graham gives the Thunderhawks one of the most athletically gifted players in the area and he's going to be a problem for any fan trying to stay in their seat, along with opposing defenses. Seniors Kaleb Thompson and Carl Johnson were big contributors last season, while sophomore Romeo Bell played like an upperclassman last year and will be a huge part of what this team accomplishes.

Manhattan Cup
I've been right just once on this prediction in the last six years. Not a good look for me here, sheesh! And now we're down to just three teams to choose from, so at least my odds are going up. The last team I was right about was Canisius. St. Joe's hasn't won it since 2008 and St. Francis hasn't won it since I was in preschool. So...Go Crusaders?
** Canisius **
Woj Cup
Conversely, I labeled the small battle last year as a clear two-horse race between O'Hara & Nichols, with O'Hara being Seabiscuit. Maybe not a two-horse race this year, and certainly not as clear cut to me as last year's dominant Hawks appeared headed...but I'll stick with the defending champs to repeat.
