The fifth set of state rankings for the 2023 the season have been released by the NYSSWA. Below are the WNY teams that made the cut:
Class AA
Niagara Falls #14
Jamestown #16
Health Sciences #22
Class A
Amherst #11
Canisius #27
Class B
Timon #4
Nichols #7
Lew-Port #14
Allegany-Limestone #19
Salamanca #24
Class C
Randolph #14
Holland #17
Class D
Clymer #10
Panama #13
Westfield #19
According to the rankings...
- The committee is up to some shenanigans in Class AA & Class B regarding their handling of the Niagara Falls loss at Lew-Port on Friday. In Class AA, they're trying to make Carlos mad at me. The Wolverines fall just two spots from #12 to #14 in NYS Class AA for their loss to the Class B Lancers, while I slid them three spots down in my local rankings. I can almost hear the universal snickering in the room as they plotted my demise in the Cataract City. More on the shenanigans in a moment.
- That last Buff State dance between Falls & Jamestown scheduled on Saturday, March 4th at 3:30 will also serve as the real Class AA Far West Regional. Aquinas, the highest ranked Class AA team from Section V, has fallen behind the Red Raiders in the state rankings.
- Health Sciences is official. They've been added to the Top 25 in NYS Class AA, after being left to linger at a magic show the last couple weeks in spots 30 & 27.
- Amherst will begin sending assistant coach Mark Kensy and his camcorder to Tappan Zee games. The Tigers are now projected to play for a state title in NYS Class A against the Dutchmen and coach Kensy has never faced an opponent he didn't want to lace up his work boots and go record.
- Following a week of no MMA teams ranked in NYS Class A (blasphemy), Canisius will now spend a week practicing disappearing card tricks at the #27 spot before cracking the Top 25 once again next week.
- Nichols moves up two spots in NYS Class B , from #9 to #7, despite the 'St. Francis incident'. That's because the Vikings are the only team to defeat Aquinas this season and they've done so twice. As a point of reference, Canisius, St. Francis, & St. Joe's have all lost to AQ this season.
- Getting back to the committee shenanigans. After Lew-Port knocks off at the time undefeated #12 NYS Class AA Niagara Falls, the Lancers are moving up in the NYS Class B rankings. How far you ask? Just two spots. So Falls is #14 in NYS Class AA and Lew-Port is #14 in NYS Class B. This is an overt attempt to get the fans in Youngstown all revved up! Not smart...those fans are literally a machine.
- After Allegany-Limestone lost its first game of the season to fellow Class B squad Salamanca, they started started free falling like a Petty tune. From #5 in the state to #19. For its efforts in the win, Salamanca was rewarded with a six-spot boost in the NYS Class B rankings from #30 Houdini to #24. I would like to offer this all up as supporting evidence of shenanigans. Class B knocks off Class B, punishable by 14 spots. Class B knocks off Class AA, we'll slide them down two spots. Now you're coming after the Gators too? Again, not smart...every year people vanish in the swamp.
- Not looking good for us in Class C. Both of the Section VI teams ranked in Class C took loses last week, with Holland dropping to #17 from #8 after a loss to Cleveland Hill and Randolph going from #3 to #14. The Cardinals loss came at the hands of York, who wasn't a ranked team in NYS Class C despite its 9-1 record coming in. York (now ranked #13) had to hop a bus and go win at Randolph by 15 points just to get a little respect. Crazy considering they used to have a steakhouse named after them!
- Clymer faces defending state champion Avoca/Prattsburgh (no longer the hyphens) in the NYS Class D Far West Regional. Rather than speculate on Clymer's chances, I will defer to my buddy Tracy and his anticipated contribution to the comments section regarding this matter.

Here is your ole buddy Tracy. I watch so many games around the state that sometimes at all runs together. I actually think Clymer is the best Class D team in Section 6. I like their ball club. Do they have a chance? well...... We lost to a very good and underrated York team and Lyons, who is very athletic and very good . Does Lyons have the discipline it takes to win a state championship, I am not sure about that. I think South Kortright has an easy trip to the Class D championship game in Class D . Back to Clymer, I think they are good , but any team still has to play at Avoca Prattsburgh's pace and it will take a strong willed team to slow the game down. That was very long winded. Hope to see you down the road buddy.
