According to the rankings...
- The chances of Niagara Falls reaching Glens Falls are trending the wrong way. The Wolverines sit at #14 in the NYS Class AAA rankings after a narrow loss at Cicero-North Syracuse while a bit shorthanded on the road. They now sit six spots behind the Far West Region favorite from Aquinas. Despite the committee's confidence that the Lil Irish will attend the St. Patty’s day parade in Glens, a review of a recent report from the NFHS technology department revealed some interesting findings. According to the report, recent search history from both Carlos and Wilson show they have been actively looking up dining options in the Glens Falls and Queensberry areas.
- The first ever Section VI Class AA Crossover matchup has changed and no longer projects as a Health/Frontier rematch from the Live Like Luca Tournament at St. Francis. After Jamestown’s win at Frontier on Thursday, the committee granted Jamestown a one-way ticket straight up the rankings, nine spots to #18 in NYS Class AA. With that single victory, Jamestown was able to leap over Health Sciences and Frontier, like Superman over tall buildings in the comic books. The committee has begun sketching designs for T-shirts that will promote Jamestown/Health as the inaugural Section VI Class AA Crossover matchup.
- The panel wasted a little time on the topic of Grand Island in their Sunday night state rankings meeting, as a motion to give them the Eden treatment was quickly granted. With one loss on the season, the Vikings were banished from the NYS Class A rankings after sitting at #16 one week ago today.
- No changes locally in the NYS Class B rankings this week. Last week in the space, I offered up Burgard as the only unbeaten public school in this classification that was not ranked. After dropping its first of the season at the hands of Olmsted, along with the panels stance on Eden, the Bulldogs will now be left barking at the moon.
- Three of the top six teams in NYS Class C hail from the Southern Tier. The seventh best team from Pembroke visits Cheektowaga on Saturday at noon.
- You can make it f0ur of the Top 25 teams that hail from the Southern Tier in NYS Class C… sort of. Maple Grove kind of made an appearance this week at number #25, kind of. The rankings suggest a tie for the #25 spot with Alexander (Section V). This had me curious, so I sent a formal request to the panel, asking for an explanation on how they arrived at a tie.
While my request went unanswered, I did speak to a source close to one of the committee members, who cleared up what happened, but asked to remain off the record. His appearance has been modified to protect his identity:
😵💫 “When they got to that last spot in Class C and the boss asked what they were thinking, the Section VI and Section V guys simultaneously stated their teams. Three rounds of arm wrestling, two thumb wars, and a last ditch attempt at rock/paper/scissors, all ended in a stalemate. It was getting late at that point, so they said let’s just call it a tie”
