* Game of the Week - Niagara Falls vs. Jamestown on Saturday, January 4th
Does this game really even need an introduction? It's Falls versus Jamestown! Sound like the Class AA Final? It just might be. It sure has been a lot of times over the past two decades. I can almost guarantee one of them reaches the final...and wins it.
For the last 12 years in a row, the Section VI Class AA title was won by either Falls or Jamestown. If not for the stunning Sweet Home upset of Niagara Falls in Jonny Flynn's final high school game in 2007, the streak would be sitting at 16 straight seasons. Over the last 12 years, Niagara Falls has seven titles (08, 09, 12, 16, 17, 18, & 19) and Jamsetown has 5 titles (10, 11, 13, 14, & 15).
Six times in the last 12 years, the Wolverines have gone head-to-head with the Red Raiders for the Class AA crown (08, 11, 12, 13, 15, & 16). Each team was victorious in three of those meetings. They've met up in a Section VI Final more times than not - a total of 12 times in the last two decades.
Jamestown won the Class AA title for three straight seasons from 2013 to 2105 and since then, Niagara Falls has enjoyed a four-peat from 2016 until the comeback thriller over North last year.
The Wolverines have big wins (by 28 points or more) over Cardinal O'Hara, Ken West, & Niagara Wheatfield, along with a hard fought victory at North Tonawanda to their credit so far this season. Jamestown beat Tapestry, won at Lancaster, and drilled Fredonia by 29, while playing tough against Health Sciences in the first round of the St. Francis Christmas Tournament last week.
Enjoy this one on Saturday, because it's a rare regular season meeting between the two. The last time it happened was December 10, 2010 in the Cataract City Classic at Niagara Falls with the host Wolverines taking it 62-54. Jamestown would avenge that loss three months later in the Class AA Final, defeating Falls for the first time in program history, 56-48, after the Red Raiders had lost to the Wolverines in a Section VI Final six times in the 10 seasons prior.
It's Falls vs. Jamestown! It's like a WNY Class AA tradition!! And, it's the 'Game of the Week'!!!
